Acrobat Pro and LiveCycle Compatibility

Can someone tell me if Acrobat Pro (version 2025.001.20435) is supposed to be compatible with PDFs created by Adobe LiveCycle Designer 11.0?  When I google I get mixed answers.  We have some simple forms created in Adobe LiveCycle Designer 11.0 with basic textboxes and checkboxes and we want to use Acrobat to fill them in (not edit them).  They don't have any fancy controls and, for the most part, they seem to be usable in Acrobat Pro, but occasionally, there will be a user who gets a warning message clicking around the various fields or worse, corrupts the PDF after saving it with the dreaded "Expected a dict object."  I just want to know Adobe's official stance on this. Are they supposed to work in Acrobat Pro or are they officially not supported?

Thanks,

Rich

Hello @7131451_lux,

I hope you are doing well.

As stated by our community product expert, Acrobat supports all valid LiveCycle forms. While Acrobat Pro supports viewing and basic interaction with XFA forms, these forms are not native PDFs. Therefore, some functionalities may be limited or behave unexpectedly. See these community discussions for more information: https://adobe.ly/4imzBYu, and https://adobe.ly/3RPzOsd

The "Expected a dict object" error typically indicates internal corruption within the PDF file. This corruption can result from:

  • Incompatibilities between XFA forms and newer versions of Acrobat.

  • Improper editing or saving of the form in non-Adobe applications.

  • Issues arising from digital signatures or extended features. See these discussions for more information: https://adobe.ly/42vpRoV

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Anand Sri.

I'm not an Adobe employee, but the answer is yes. Acrobat should be able to handle all (valid) LCD forms.
