Acrobat Pro crashes when using NVDA with Visual Highlight setting turned on

This has been a problem for a few months but I just recently pinpointed the problem to not just using NVDA but having the NVDA setting "Visual Highlight" turned on. I commented on a Github thread for NVDA and they suggested that I report this to Adobe, as the issue is with Acrobat.

Does anyone know if Adobe is aware of this bug and working on a fix? The Visual Highlight setting in NVDA is very useful, both for me as an accessibility tester to have a visual reminder where I am in the document and also for recording purposes, to show others how NVDA moves through a document and announces elements.

I have tried:

- uninstalling both NVDA and Acrobat Pro and reinstalling them (after restarting my computer)

- tried both having NVDA on first then opening the PDF, and having the PDF open then turning NVDA

- using the Repair tool in Acrobat to repair the installation

I'm using an HP 14 inch laptop running Windows 11 Home 64 bit, OS build 26100.7462, 8 GB RAM, AMD Athlon Gold 3150U with Radeon Graphics processor, 238 GB storage

I don't know if Adobe is entirely aware of your issues, but you can file a bug report with Adobe through this link. This is the official way to contact Adobe and file a bug report, and they are responsive to these issues.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Randy! I did also create a bug report, I just also posted here to cover my bases so hopefully Adobe staff see the problem, wasn't sure which venue gets more timely attention 🙂

@RachitJain  Not sure if this helps but I did ask about this issue on the NVDA Github under a similar reported bug and was told: "When we request information to perform the highlighting, Adobe reader crashes. Adobe Reader shouldn’t crash when receiving such API calls. Please contact Adobe to request a fix."

Hi,

We tried reproducing the crash on our side on the mentioned Acrobat and NVDA version with Visual highlight ON but was unable to see .
Please share the crash dump with us so that we can resolve this.
For Getting the Crash Logs, please do the following:

  1. When Acrobat Crashes , Open Windows Task Manager , Got To Processes, There you can see a process Acrobat.exe / “Adobe Acrobat DC”
  2. Right Click on this process and click “Create Dump File”
  3. Dump file will be created in the Temp folder of user (as specified on the dialog you get after creating dump files).
  4. Save this DMP file on any Cloud Storage and Share the link for that with us on mail.

We will investigate the dumps provided by you on priority and help you on this further. Also, if you are comfortable for a meeting over call, do let us know.

You can refer to "https://helpx.adobe.com/in/acrobat/kb/collect-logs-crash-freeze.html" article to get the dumps.

Thanks

Rachit
