Question

Acrobat Pro X, Mac OS X 10.6.6, HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A can't detect scanner.

Is there a way to get my Scanner, HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A, recognized by Acrobat X running in Mac OS X 10.6.6

I understand that this HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A print, scan fax, copy, web machine uses PCL as a printer protocol.

Can Acrobat Pro X handle both PCL and Postcript?

If not, is there a workaround?

Printer Command Language, more commonly referred to as PCL, is a page description language (PDL) developed by HP as a printerhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_printer protocol

Thanks in advance!

I cannot help specifically for HP but if there is a printer control center software open it and see if you can find a configuration or preferences dialog that allows you to specify an IP address for your scanner -

Open your router software and find the IP address of the scanner - and if you can assign the scanner to the known IP address all will magically work.

    Same issue:
    Upgraded to OS X 10.7

    Upgraded Adobe 7 to 10.1.1

New HP Officejet Pro 8500A Premier (which replaced the HP 8500)

With OS 10.6 and Adobe 7, selecting Create PDF from Scanner caused the HPScan program to open and then allowed selecting HPScan operation; clicking the GO button caused the system to scan exactly as it should.

Now I've loaded the softare above on two different MacBook Pro's and both behave as described in this string.  One doesn't show HPScan at all; the other shows HPScan but blows up once the Scan program launches and cannot find a scanner.

It's possible to work around this, but it's cumbersome and negates the reasons I purchased all this stuff.  Here's the workaround:

    1. Open System Preferences

    2. Select Officejet Pro 8500

    3. Click on the Scan button - top center of window

    4. Click on Open Scanner

    5. Top right of next window - click on Scanner

    6. Bottom left of that window - Select document feeder or flatbed; Set the scan size; Scan To: use the drop down to select Adobe X

    7. Click Scan

The scan will open in Adobe X.  And this is idiotically cumbersome and annoying.  Adobe and HP:  FIX THIS

    September 29, 2011

I have the same issue using 8500A Plus (model sold in France) and Adobe X Pro 10.1.1.

I never get it working  with OS X 10.6. Tried to upgrade to OS x 10.7 and it has not fixed my issue.

I have downloaded the latest software from HP "HP_Lion_Ink_SW_v12.13.22.dmg". I can scan with HP Scan, Capture Image but can't see HPscan in Acrobat.

I want to use Acrobat with OCR version and I can't at the moment.

Please could HP and Adobe find a solution that it is really a big problem.

    THanks

I am having the same issue.  Acrobat Pro does not detect the wireless printer.

    iMac

    Lion 10.7.2

    Acrobat Pro 10.1.1

    Lion 10.7.2

    HP Envy100 D410 Series

All software and firmware is  up to date.

I can scan from the Print & Scan Menu, System Preferences Pring & Scan, Preview, Image Capture and directly from the HP Utility library/Printers/hp/utilities/HP Utility, select addtional settings, select Open Embedded Web Server.  I can not scan from Acrobat Pro.

Incidentally, I have this set up with the same problem...

    MacBookPro

    Snow Leopard 10.6.8

    Acrobat Pro 9.4.6

Just reporting in and awaiting a fix.

I've got the same problem and I called Apple about it today and they were not able to help.  My setup is as follows:

    • OS = 10.6.8
    • Acrobat X
    • HP AIO 8500

Situation: Apple image capture works, but scan to PDF either crashes or can not find scanner.

Solution: Installing HP_Installer_Officejet_Full_Group05_10.3.dmg solved the problem.

It's an Adobe issue. I've talked with them on the phone a few times, they've even called me back. Still not sure what's going on. I don't believe this is the only model with this issue either, but there is clearly an issue with Officejet all-in-one machines.

Try uninstalling the CD that came with the printer. That CD is what

    initially messed up my machine.

Then try installing the new software from the HP website and I am now

    scanning.

I have scanned with this scanner on OS X 10.6.6 and it works. With HP, I have noticed that all HP drivers list as single entry called "HP Scan" in the Acrobat Scanner dropdown. But after you click Scan, the HP Scan Application will let you choose the scanner.

Have a look at the snapshot below which shows how to "Browse for devices":

Besides that I hope you tried with the latest HP driver which is compatible with OS X 10.6.6.

Please let us know if you are still not able to Scan using Acrobat X.

    @Ravishar

Thank you for your answer.   But I am still not able to Scan using Acrobat X.

You mentioned that you "have scanned with this scanner on OS X 10.6.6 and it works".

Are you absolutely sure that you were using the same scanner as I have?

When I look at your picture, it says Officejet 6500  ?!

My efforts so far include the following

I have uninstalled all new and old HP software

and even added extensive manual uninstallation of sw components

I have reinstalled the latest available HP software

I have tested various methods to use the scanner in Mac OS X 10.6 without Using HP Software

and verified that the following methods to scan a document is working.

Method one: Scan from the Preview application

Method two: Scan from the Image Capture application

Method three: Scan from the Printer browser

In the Acrobat X  File - Create - PDF from scanner - Input - Scanner selection dialogue

I can access my old scanner/printer Canon MP780

but the new HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A is not present in the choice list

My dialogue window doesn't look like yours?

I am still looking very much forward for som help or ideas here. My own ideas are exhausted for the moment.

    @Phillip Jones

Thank you for your answer. I haven't tried your method yet. I want to give a possible official method some more time. I'll let you know.

Are you saying that you are only seeing one value i.e "Canon MP780/MP790" in the scanner dropdown? Isn't there another entry saying "HP Scan"?

An old Scanner, Canon PIXMA 780, shows up as it should in the "Create PDF from Scanner" procedure.

But the new HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A  can not be detected.

You'll need to install some sort of TWAIN scanner software for Acrobat to recognize the scanner. Try here  http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/

Yes I have seen the solution with " TWAIN SANE Interface for MacOS X"

but have not tested it yet.

I would prefer to investigate if there are any "official" methods to work this out first.

Anybody here with experience using this TWAIN SANE Interface?

I am still using X.4.11. and I have SANE Twain Interface setup for a UMAX Scannner.

when you go to the site. Locate the section of Mac and look for list of supported devices. If your device is supported  go to section to download  the components. dowload all of them (up to 5 or 6) do not touch SDK type files.

Install in no particular order but restart after install. now go to system preferences and set up  for your scanner (or family of scanners).

    Close System Preferences.

Open Acrobat and go to create PDF from scanner click on button for device. should show up as SANE-TWAIN or SANE.  Your all set.

It is the OS that provides printing routines not applications. If you can print from Preview or textedit you can print from Acrobat.

    Printing is working OK.

The problem is: I want to use Acrobat Pro X scanning function but the scanner doesn't show up.
