Acrobat unable to save forms (but worked 2 months ago)

I made a form a couple months ago from a scanned image and it worked fine.

Today I'm trying to do the same thing, but when I try to save as "Reader Extended PDF," I get the error message "This document could not be Reader Enabled."

What changed that it suddenly stopped working? Is there a reset button I can try or clear a cache? Is there a service I need to restart?

I've checked for updates and none are available. Thanks!

Resolution found but untested. Adobe support confirmed it's a 2023 patch and free for all versions of Acrobat.

As someone is bound to mention, legacy support ended except where legally required per EULA.

Even so, there is a product integrity requirement to not break the original EULA when installed on a compatible OS. As CS5 and CS6 activation servers are currently up and running for new installs, EULAs are in perpetity, and Adobe is compelled to provide a workaround or make-good (EG Cloud for free for life of user). Keep that in mind before anyone says to upgrade.

See documentation:

Unfortunately, the information I received appears to be incorrect. Here's what I've confirmed:

  • January 2023 security update broke older Adobe Acrobat functions as trying to patch exploits in reader. While I was able to update, it didn't fix my original issue.
  • Release notes say patch updates are free for all versions "Only new, major versions of Acrobat must be purchased."
  • I had uninstalled Acrobat per one agent's directions, but the next agent said I could not reinstall it on my OS (contradicting two previous agents). So I went back to my original Acrobat via system restore.
  • I was then able to reinstall Acrobat without uninstalling by using physical installation media.
  • I also tried the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool, and I do not recommend

Important to note, the last agent apologized for the misinformation and offered a free upgrade to CS6 which I may do if I buy new hardware. So if you're on an older version, make sure Adobe honors your EULA with a workaround or make-good.

I fear that you have been in contact with a scammer, not with Adobe. CS6 is no longer available and Adobe is not giving out free copies. It is most likely a pirated copy and is likely to come with malware.

How do you make contact? Were you contacted by PM? If so, what is the email address? One group of scammers uses .outlook.com, which is not an Adobe email address.

Please send details so we can better assist. Adobe Staff does answer on these forums and they can be identified because their tag says "Adobe Employee". Volunteers who are in the system have a tag that says "Community Expert". I am a volunteer and my opinions are my own.

Also, I noticed that you were trying to save as "Reader Extended". What version of the free Reader do your users have? I'm asking because this is something that we used to use to enable users to save forms and make comments. I think it was when Acrobat 11 was released eleven years ago that we stopped doing this because Adobe gave Reader these functions automatically. I could be wrong on the version — it might have been earlier than 11, but it wasn't later. Can you do a spot check to see if they can save the form even if you skip "Save as > Reader Extended"?

Your version of Adobe Acrobat is too old.

You need the actual version of Acrobat DC or Acrobat 2020.

Unfortunately your answer directly contradicts another answer from Adobe support, and violates the EULA.
