Activating Acrobat Standard 8.0

Question

I got Acrobat Standard 8.0 years ago with a Canon scanner. I've been running it on my latest PC (originally Windows 7, now 10) for over four years without trouble. A few weeks ago I installed Acrobat Reader because some downloaded PDFs are not compatible. Today, when I started Acrobat Standard, I got an activation dialog that seems to be unable to connect to the expected server. The phone number provided as an alternative (866 772 3623) seems to be dead.

I found this topic saying that old versions can no longer be activated, but that's not acceptable. Is there any solution other than taking Adobe to small claims court?

Some people have reported success in getting a license for Acrobat X (also outdated and no longer compatible with any current OS, mind you) instead of Acrobat 8 when they threatened to take them to court, but basically the answer is No.
