Had same problem as you described + when mousing over History panel, same thing happened, however i found a fix, at least for me.

Find on the internet and download libmysqld.dll. You can download it from: http://www.dlldll.com/libmysqld.dll_download.html. Backup your old file by renaming it e.g old_libmysqld.dll. Then copy downloaded file to following directory: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat

Worked fine after that, you could try it too, but make sure you back up the previous file so you can restore it if the new dll has some problems. Hope this helps

I also have problem with Adobe Reader 8.1. It regular crashes after few seconds.
I tried to delete all flexnet and reader folders in c:\program files\adobe c:\program files\common files and c:\documents and settings . I also ran two different registry cleaners and reinstalled Reader twice, but there's still no improvement, while Adobe Reader works fine.

However, I checked the services.msc and I think there is a problem with licensing service. I can't start Adobe LM service, as well as FLEXnet Licensing Service. In both cases, I receive error "Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.". But I checked the files and they are in their locations. Activation is greyed out as well in Adobe Reader help menu.

Does anybody have any ideas, what else should I do?

Thank you very much.
Regards

I find your question hard to understand because you say

>I also have problem with Adobe Reader 8.1. It regular crashes after few seconds.

and also

>, while Adobe Reader works fine.

What works, and what fails?

OK... when I start Adobe Acrobat 8.1, it always crashes after few seconds, no matter what I do, but Adobe Reader works like a charm, without any problems and crashes so far.
I read that Reader doesn't use FLEXnet so I guess that the reason for Acrobat's crashes is somehow connected to it's licensing.

It was a typo, I meant Adobe Acrobat 8.1 not Adobe Reader 8.1.

Sorry

I have the exact same problem on my brand new PC running Vista.

The first thing that happens when I boot up my PC is that I receive a message "Acrotray has stopped working". I was hoping the upgrade from 8.1.1 to 8.1.2 would fix this, but it has not.

RUN "msconfig" and select the "services" tab. Make sure that FLEXnet Licensing Service is selected. It is the ONLY change I made and the self-closing problem resolved.

I had the same problem with Adobe shutting down a few seconds after it opened.

What fixed this for me was to simply register my Adobe product. It is working fine now.

Note: I did make sure that Flexnet and Acrotray.exe were checked. (They were indeed already checked)

My problem is that Acrobat professional freezes---almost every time I try to use it. I have 8.1.2 (and that's when the trouble started) on XP professional. I tried the solution in #255, but I don't even have FLEXnet and Acrotray under the msconfig services tab. I'm reluctant to uninstall, install. Any other suggestions?

Me again! I tried the suggestion in #190 above and copied the FLEXnet file. When I tried to delete, I received a message saying it was in use by another program. When I tried to shut down, I was advised that Acrobat Traylcon was still open as well as "sprtcmd??.exe". I know I have received the Traylcon message before. What's going on? I have XP Sp2; all the memory etc., and my Acrobat 8 Professional is registered. Help, anyone?

I was having the same problem, after I followed the instructions here http://www.internetfixes.com/readers_questions/IF01720.htm ( to disable some programs). My computer was slow, so I was looking for solutions.

After coming here, and reading the following post

"Kelly Favello - 9:35am Feb 11, 08 PST (#246 of 259)"
I went back and enabled everything.

It now works like a charm.

If you disable anything, you may want to see which one affects Adobe and enable it, or just enable everything at startup.

Could it be at all related that acrobat pro for me crashes before the splash screen all of a sudden? I have cs3 master collection and it's all been working fine for some time. I tried to open a pdf yesterday and I got a nondescript error message that acrobat had encountered an error and needed to close. There was a dump file created but it didn't tell me anything useful. Should I try to reinstall just acrobat? Will that screw up the rest of suite? Like others, I'm afraid to just uninstall it. Flexnet service is not disabled, but when I go to the program folder and try to run acrotray I get a different error after about 30 seconds about memory at a certain location not being able to be read. I think I've been able to shut off acrotray.exe in the past without ill effects, though.

*********SIMPLE FIX*************

Adobe Tech Support helped me with this one. After checking folder and disk permissions (and finding everything ok) we renamed the FLEXNET folder (\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FLEXnet) to "old_FLEXNET". After doing this, the issue of Acrobat closing spontaneously after 10 seconds resolved.

Prior to this I had unistalled, restarted, reinstalled, etc. all without success.

BTW. This same issue exists on the Mac. Although I can't test it, perhaps this fix will work on that platform too.

Good luck.

Hello All,

Thanks to everyone on this post for their ideas. I re-enabled the acrotray.exe in my startup files (using msconfig) and started the service as admin. The problem went away for now.

Like many recent posts, I also suspect the problem is related to the flexnet/macrovision software that I disabled in my services startup.

It's odd - when I googled those services to figure out what they were before disabling them, it showed them as related to Macrovision and some-type of copyright software. I had no idea they were related to the Adobe product.

Adobe---come on guys...you are above copyright/spyware plays like this. If nothing else, you could at least post this problem to your support website so that when people search for "Adobe 8 suddenly closes, quits, etc" - a user would at least have an idea to re-enable all the startup programs and services they disabled, since doing a repair/reinstall often times doesn't turn these back on.

Help your users out. Without google, I wouldn't have found this forum and been able to fix the problem.

Sincerely,

Jeremy
...owner of a LEGIT copy of Acrobat 8 and feeling a bit pissy about Adobe's lame/hidden copyright scheme.

SOLVED!

the problem was the FLEXnet service that wasn't up and running. why?

ran services.msc, looked for flexnet and noticed that the process path had a minus (-) in front of it, e.g.:

-"C:\Programs..."

(strange is it?)

all i did was running regedit and looking for the string: -"C:\
found one, removed the minus, closed regedit.

ran again services.msc and started the flexnet service.
NO MORE 10SEC CRASHES!

tell if it worked for you too!

My Adobe Pro 8.1.2 on Vista Business started closing after 10 seconds today. Why? Don't know. I renamed the C:\users...\FlexNet folder as suggested in post #263 and it seems to have worked for now. It forced Acrobat to activate itself again. I was not able to force an activation because the activation option was grayed out on Help-About. The Flexnet licensing service was running and acrotray was checked and it still closed itself. Seems to be an activation issue, maybe compounded by a Microsoft patch...

I have the very same issue - no error message at all, just closes after 10 seconds. I am running Visa. The only way I can read the pdf file is to open it, then do a quick print before it closes. I worked with Dell for 2 hours on Saturday. They were unable to determine what was going on. I even uninstalled and then re-installed, what a pain. Same problem, shuts down after 10 seconds.
Anyone have a fix?

Must be expensive, running on your Visa

Anyway... you don't post enough DETAILS for anyone to help

You need the EXACT versions of what you are running

Also... did you click the Show All Messages command and read all of the messages in this thread to see if some of the other ideas might help you?
