Yikes, I just read this post as I'm ready to purchase close to 100 Professional upgrades. Has this issue been resolved? Is there an issue if you upgrade it using a CD as well?

No resolution as of yet. Adobe is no longer really communicating regarding the issue. We have the issue NO MATTER HOW IT IS INSTALLED. BEWARE! Danger Will Robinson.

Hi Flora,

What finally worked for me was updating to 7.0.9 (selecting - again! - all 4 of the updates I had already done). Acrobat did this one at a time, and I had to reboot after each one. Once I was done with all that, I did Steps 2, 3 and 4 from

http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/332791.html

When I opened a pdf file after all that, a large verification screen popped up and when I told it to go ahead and verify, it did, and all has been well ever since.

I wish I could bill someone for my time.

My issue was to get the functionality of 8 which incidentally works FINE on my toshiba laptop. Go figure. I'll work on the affected desktops this weekend. This is all extra effort though that should not be necessary after so long an issue being reported. Sorry for ranting very tired and our productivity is seriously hampered here.

Chris

The issue is not yet resolved. We have tried using a different serial number, which seems (so far) not to have a problem, but we have definately established an issue with the Adobe Licensing module. If there were to be a problem that your business can npot deal with, I would wait on your upgrade.

actaully trying to reinstall 7.0and see what happens there. I hate wasting so much time on this. Bought Nitro for under 100 as a backup but nearly the functionality. I would love a solution.

Hi All,

I just updated our two machines last Friday to Acrobat 8 Pro and now have this problem on one of them. Both are Dell Dimension 9150 with 3 GHz PD processors, 2 GB RAM and GeForce 7300 LE graphics cards. The software configuration is also the same, Windows XP SP2 with all updates, McAfee VirusScan 10 and a lot of other software. Only Photoshop CS2 is missing on the machine, that is still working. On the other one, A8 closes after about 10 seconds.

I already tried everything mentioned in this thread now, but nothing helped.

Is there any bug fix or workaround from Adobe for this issue yet?

Dennis

PS: Sorry for my bad English... :-(

NOT A SOLUTION, BUT AN UPDATE:

I know that Jeff Moran from Adobe had been investigating this issue with several customers in mid-December (including myself), so I assume he either gave up (if nobody was able to pin down a common denominator) or he is still working on it.

Shortly after I posted the problem, my PC's partition went bad (probably a bad virus) and I had to fdisk and reformat my drives and reinstalled Windows XP with all my applications (including Acrobat 8 Pro). So far...about 6 weeks later, I have not seen the problem resurface (knock on wood).

I'm fairly certain that I have since updated all of the security patches from Microsoft and applied all of the CS2 patches from Adobe, so this is still a mystery.

If my Acrobat starts doing the "10 second quit" again, I will certainly post here and post any updates and/or changes to my system that had been applied immediately prior. I'm also going to try and do a system restore point before each and every change -- just in case.

There appears to be a common thread here, maybe I'm wrong;

Dell PCs
Non standard language settings?

Maybe I'm wrong, but this might be why it's difficult to replicate by Adobe. Certainly seems to suggest it's OS RELATED (I'm not saying it's not an Acrobat fault) as Eric's re-installation seems to have cured the problem (so far)

Sorry not to offer any solution, just opinions.

Well whatever the cause is, I sure hope it can officially be nailed down. I literally cringe now every time I launch Acrobat just waiting for it to "pop" and disappear. But as I stated, it has now been about 6 weeks since my new image on the hard drive and everything is OK.

I told Jeff Moran that I do recall on my original configuration that the system had Adobe CS and Acrobat 6 Pro originally, then upgraded to Acrobat 7 Pro...then upgraded to Adobe CS2...then upgraded to Acrobat 8 Pro...with Adobe Video Collection installed somewhere in the middle. So the machine definitely had a lot of upgraded and changed files. He just sent an email to me saying that he is still trying to track down the problem and it appears that for a few customers, a complete uninstall of Adobe CS apps and Acrobat, then a reinstall cured their problem.

I don't recall if anyone has had this disappearing act issue with just Acrobat installed (and no Adobe CS apps).

He still thinks it is a problem with the activation.

For what its worth, I had this problem suddenly appear after
uninstalling and reinstalling because of my other issue (Acrobat
window opens uninvited).

The only oddity during reinstallation was that while the initial two
serials were required during installation, the program skipped
validation and then just shut down just after starting - I couldnt get
to the validation menu in time to see if it was even available except
once when it appeared (fleetingly) to be dimmed and unavailable.

Having seen this thread I took the nuclear option -

1. uninstalled Acrobat
2. deleted all temporary files
3. deleted Documents and Settings for me and all users all subfolders
pertaining to Adobe under Application Data and Local Settings
4. deleted all adobe directories under C:\Program Files\Common Files
5. did a registry serarch using "Registrar Lite" for all keys
containing Adobe and deleted all 10,000,000 or so of them

Reinstalled Acrobat et voila - success. The two serials as usual and
then activation after installation which proceeded correctly. Acrobat
no longer shuts down just after opening.

I dont know if 1-5 are all needed but if anyones desperate it worked
for me!!

Greetings,
If you are interested in working with Adobe directly please post me your email address and I will contact you off-line. Adobe has not been able to reproduce this in house. If you can off a way for an Acrobat Engineer to troubleshoot a machine that the problem is occuring on it would really help us a lot, and those on this thread.

I know sharing your email is not always desired, but I have no other way to contact you at this point, especially if it is not in your User Forum profile.

I appreciate any help I can get on this issue. Furthermore, Adobe is aware of the issue and we are working on it. All the helpful posts to the forum have helped us narrow it down.

Thanks
Jeff

My Acrobat 8 just started today. I noticed a quick activation failure message before it closed for the first time. Now it is doing the 10 second thing.

I am thinking it is something with the activation/phone home.

Forgot to mention that I have tried every repair in this forum. None have seemed to work except it will stay open if I keep something in the menu bar open. But that closes as soon as you click your mouse on something. Then Bam your DONE.

How did you install Acrobat 8? Did you uninstall a previous version first? Did you install from an actual CD or download the update? I just purchased 80 licenses and haven't installed it yet because I'm afraid due to this problem. They have told me to uninstall my previous version before installing Acrobat 8.

I installed on a fresh install of Vista. So I had no uninstall or anything. My copy came bundled with the Adobe Web Studio 2.3.

After I left my post earlier I had played with the services for Adobe/Macromedia and made sure I enabled all of them. Now it stays open. But it is still saying that it is not activated. So I try to activate it and the option is greyed out.

I think I may have to Uninstall/Reinstall to fix this error now.

Adobe feels this is an Activation issue. If anyone is able to troubleshoot this I have an idea. If you are willing, please install the new Photoshop CS Beta (URL below). The activation piece of Photoshop CS3 might encounter the same issue. If it does, perhaps an error message will come up that will shine some light on the error.

Please report back to the U2U forum with your results. Again, thank you in advance for your help.

"Adobe feels this is an Activation issue."

I reckon Adobe knows it's an authenticity / activation issue, but can't decide which path to take.

1: Paying customers come first so stop the authenticity all together until a solution is found.

OR

2: Keep shuting down all unverifiable copies know matter what the cause or what happens to the paying customer. (Sounds like another very large company with an employer named Bill !)

I'm sure it's in their mechanism to prevent illegal usage. So either all of us in this forum are using illegal versions ( Yeah right ! ), and the software is phoning home, then shutting down because the Adobe server has rejected it.

Or Adobe knows there is a problem with their mechanism to prevent illegal usage, but are yet to find a sollution that will fix the problems for their paying customers, but also keep the illegal copies shutting down.

I've not heard back from anyone, but I have some steps I would like users with this problem to try and then report back.

1. Backup the trusted storage file, located here; C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FLEXnet\adobe_00080000_tsf.data.

2. Then delete the corrupted trusted storage file.

3. Launch and attempt to Activate Acrobat again.

Please let me know if this works. Information one way or another will be very helpful. Again, thank you to everyone who has posted constructively to this thread.

Jeff

p.s. if this does not work you may replace the file you backed-up to its original location.
