ADA Compliance for Screen Readers: Associating Body Tags to a Header Cell

Hello,

I have a table I created in Indesign. I can only make the header row for column headers. When I open the PDF file in Acrobat I create the Row Headers and make ID names. It's easy to assign 25 data cells to it's appropriate column header because I can edit them all at once. But once I select the rows and try to asssign them all to their appropriate row headers, I'm given an error that implies I have to do them individually as they are all assigned to a different column header. (Conflicting Values for the Selected Cells)

Is there a more efficient way to go about this? I would like to not individually click almost 200 boxes to associate a header cell.

Hi @hal_1352,

Hope you are doing well. Thanks for writing in!

When dealing with tables in Acrobat, here’s a more efficient approach to assign row headers to multiple cells at once:

  • Use the Tags Pane: Instead of manually assigning headers to the table, make sure it is properly tagged in Acrobat by going to the Tags pane (View > Show/Hide > Navigation Panes > Tags).
  • Use the Reading Order Tool: This tool can help you select cells more easily. Go to Tools > Accessibility > Edit Document, and select the Reading Order tool. You can click on the table, and it should allow you to select rows more easily.
  • Select Multiple Cells: Hold down the Shift key and click to select multiple cells in the same row. This may allow you to assign the same row header to all selected cells at once.
  • Set Row Headers: After selecting, right-click and choose "Table Cell Properties," then navigate to the "Header" section to assign the appropriate row header. If all selected cells are recognized as part of the same row, this should work.
  • Revisit InDesign: If possible, revisit your original table in InDesign. Ensure that your row headers are set up correctly before exporting to PDF, which might help streamline the process in Acrobat.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, I think the issue I am running into is once each cell is assigned to their column headers using the multiple selection tool, those same cells also coorespond to a row header. The multiple selection tool won't let me select the whole row because each cell in a row is now assigned to a different column header.

Column A1-A4 assigned to Column Header 1
Column B1-B4 assigned to Column Header 2
Column C1-C4 assigned to Column Header 3 ... these work multiple.

Row A1-C1 would have to be assigned individually it seems to Row header A as A1 is assigned to 1, B1 is assigned to 2, C1 is assigned to 3. I can't click the plus button in this step to associate a header.
