Adobe Acrobat Freezing constantly.

Over the last few days, everytime I and a few other Adobe Acrobat users just open the app, it hangs and we need to wait for it to respond. Sometimes it works, but it is unpredictable. This was not an issue last week. I have updated to the newest version via updates yet it still happens. I paused virus scanning w/o any improvement. 

 

I also tried to disable enhanded security and protected mode, but that does not seem to help either.

 

Do you have any suggestions, this is quite annoying.

Adding this setting to our environment (via a GPO) seemed to have resolved our slowness/freezing issues with Acrobat Pro. 

Edit>Preferences>Security enhanced>uncheck "Enable Protected Mode at startup".

A few years ago, we applied this setting to Adobe Reader using a group policy setting. Back then, Adobe Reader was exhibiting slowness and freezing when launching PDFs from one of the financial application that gets used across the enterprise. However, it seems that we never applied this same policy for Acrobat Pro. We noticed this on Thursday, and then updated our policy to include the same reg key for Acrobat Pro. 

 

These are the reg keys in question that configure the policy:

 

Path (for Reader): SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\DC\FeatureLockDown
Path (for Acrobat Pro): SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\DC\FeatureLockDown

Reg Value Type: DWORD
Reg Value Name: bProtectedMode
Reg Value Data: 0

 

I don't expect this to work for most folks in this thread since it seems that many have already tried, but I wanted to mention it anyways.

So was able to get the issue resolved after a couple of additional contacts with support. It involved:

- disabling "New Acrobat"

- in Add/Remove programs in Windows, repair any and ALL Microsoft Visual C++ reistributables that allow you, any that don't allow the repair simply remove

- run the Adobe Acrobat repair install

 

And that's pretty much it. Reboot the computer and it was good to go. Running as fast as it did before all the bugs started popping up. Hope this helps

Hi all! In case my experience could help anyone:

I also got this "white square" with "spinning circle" which made Adobe Acrobat Reader DC hang/freeze. But, here we are talking about the application beeing published in an on-prem Citrix site, as a "seamless application", and also using the 32-bit Norwegian version, running on Windows Server 2019. In addition, it's packaged as an AppV-application, not locally installed. Nevertheless we have been running this setup for quite some time, and only this last week (from after April 1st) the issue has occured. 

What seems to fix it in our case is adding the following registry setting via GP Preferences:

Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\DC\FeatureLockdown

Value: bWhatsNewExp

Data: 0x1 (DWORD)

 

From Adobe: 

This feature was phased in incrementally over 2022. When enabled, the default user on first launch will see a What's New screen as well as a See new features notication. These UI items appear once. Possible values include:
  • 0: Enable the What's New experience.
  • 1: Disable.

 

So, after disabling it (= setting the value to 1) the problem disappeared!

Would you mind sharing the steps you are doing to when the application freezes? A small video recording of the same would be very helpful for more clarity?

 

What is the version of the Acrobat DC you are using? To check the version go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure you have the recent version 24.01.206XX installed. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Also try to repair the installation from the help menu (Win Only) and see if that works.

Please try to reset the Acrobat preferences as described here https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/how-to-reset-acrobat-preference-settings-to-defau...

 

If it still doesn't work, would you mind collecting the Adobe CC logs https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-log-collector.html , Procmon logs (Win Only) https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/Labs/acromonitor.html and Crash/freeze logs https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/collect-logs-crash-freeze.html share them via any cloud storage. Just upload the log file to the cloud and generate the link and share that link with us for further investigation.

I have Adobe Acrobat Pro| Version 2024.002.20857 | 64-bit and yet still freezes all the time. A task that I used to do in 5 minutes now takes 10 times longer (if lucky that it won’t freeze that many times)

Adobe Acrobat Pro used to be such a great robust application back then, unfortunately with the integration to the Cloud it all went that the drainage. 

I am so frustrated over my productivity being so slow and painful due to the freezing issues. Rebooting the computer so many times is now a common routine (this due that that I cannot even close the application unless I reboot)

Same here! It started yesterday, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app at least 3 times, it's making it so I can't get all my work done... 🤬😡

Is there any solution to this? I have tried multiple suggestions in this thread. Nothing has worked. I cant get any work done. I am dead in the water. The app doesnt post any crash logs.

May I suggest that Adobe stop adding all these ridiculous features and simply streamline the program? Adobe is overcomplicating a simple task while overcharging its customers. Much appreciated.

Absolutely 100% agree!  This is so frustrating I go to attach a PDF file and it says it's uploading to the cloud and it takes over 10 minutes! I am so frustrated as I am not being productive with my work having to wait for these darn things to upload then you have to cancel it and then start over!

I have the same issue.  PDF freezes every day for me.  I open several documents (tabs) and suddenly start freezing when I am closing the tabs not needed.  I have to use PDF every day and it is just not good to have this freeze.  I thought it was an issue with memory, but new ram was added and still freezes.  Should i go to the old acrobat reader instead?  I did not have this issue before.  Does it have to do with all the new AI stuff added?

new issue today - the pdf file will not show you the contents unless you scroll up and down.  then it would not open anything.  restarted computer and it worked.   the freezing issue at the beginning is not happening anymore as it was.  the only thing that was done to my computer was to add 8G of RAM.

Adobe Acrobat has become a very painful, horrible and a nightmarish software to deal with. I have an i9-14th gen and 32 GB ram laptop and even then this horrid application freezes every now and then. 

Instead of developing thousands of softwares, please focus on what  you have produced and maintain the basic qualities.

I'm finding that the issues are even worse with Windows 11. I've tried everything I have found through my research to get Acrobat to work with Windows 11 and it doesn't help. I am paying a lot for a program that I've had to remove from my computer because it makes the entire thing freeze up. Five re-installs of Windows 11, dozens of remove, clean, re-install Adobe products and still not fixed. I will definitely not be renewing my subscription of these products and will be going back to the really old versions I have on CD and can install directly onto the computer.

I could send you filkes from 3-4 workstation. Our Pro subscriptions are freezing ALL the time or working incredibly slow. We just want some Pro editing features not having all this transferring data in realtime back and forth to the cloud. W can't even perform simple markups anymore
