Question

Adobe Acrobat, PDF Version downgrade, audit trail

Hi All,

I`m using Adobe Acrobat PDF Pro, the issue is that each time I`m doing preflight check and embed audit trail, than PDF file version is downgraded from version 1.6 to version 1.3.

I will be appreciate for any advice how to avoid this.

Adobe Acrobat version: 10.116

Preflight version: 10.1.3

Thank you in advance

Arek

I do not see any rule in the preflight to set PDF version. This seems to be just something it may do. But let's look at the details.

Simply running preflight with checking does not save a file, but embedding an audit trail does. My version of Acrobat does not mark files as PDF 1.3, but I cannot test with your file for the reason noted.

It seems very reasonable for software to save at the oldest version that the contents of the file can justify. This makes for maximum compatibility. It is not reasonable to reject a file with higher compatibility. This seems a very good feature (if Acrobat or preflight are doing it), in line will all industry needs. Of course it would be entirely wrong for the software to, for example, flatten transparency or recompress images to meet PDF 1.3.

(Your preflight rule allows PDF/X-3, and this MUST be PDF 1.3 - clearly the people setting up the rule will not be surprised).

So it means that due to rule from preflight , PDF version is set to 1.3 and not for example 1.6?

When you use the preflight profile in Adobe Acrobat DC Pro you will get PDF version 1.6.

Why does it make you sad (or concerned) that the PDF file is PDF 1.3? Seems a good thing. Was anything lost? (I don't have a 7ZIP decoder).

I`m working with the companies which expect files with pdf 1.4 as minimum, I don`t think that 1.3 is not ok. Strange is that version is going up and down.

Find link to SFX package, if this will not work I will share link to each file.

Ok, I find the profile does the following things

Colors: error if objects use RGB

Rendering: warning if custom halftone used

Standards compliance: error if neither PDF/X-3 nor PDF/X-4

Custom checks: Many (nearly 100)!

Still, I don't see that it should cause this by itself. Of course, if the file contains no PDF 1.4/5/6/7 features it is entirely right and valid for Acrobat to save it as PDF 1.3.

At some point the file needs to be made as PDF/X-3 or PDF/X-4. Which of these is it, and when do you save it as PDF/X (initial creation, before preflight, after preflight?)

Below you will found link to package with 4 pdf files:

01 test_pX_FB_X-4 - clean PDF (PDF version is 1.6)

02 test_pX_FB_X-4 - report from the preflight (PDF version is 1.6)

03 test_pX_FB_X-4 - with preflight (PDF version is 1.3)

04 test_pX_FB_X-4 - after removal of the preflight (PDF version is coming back to version 1.6)

I will be appreciate for your support.

If it is such a simple profile you could send us screen shots of each part of it in turn. We cannot guess what we cannot see.

Please give full details, enough for us to create an identical profile. Especially, but not only, What do you have under Convert to standard?

How can I do this, the only way I see is to send you preflight profile, are any other options?

Exactly which preflight profile and actions are you using? Each one will do different things, and some may do exactly what you describe.

Hi,

I`m using custom preflight profile, it makes only some spot check without any fixups.
