I have a document in Word that when I try to PDF the fonts do not show up.  When I select the option of Print to PDF the fonts embed but when I save as PDF or export to PDF the fonts do not show up.  Is there some sort of setting I need to apply to fix this??  I need to be able to save as PDF. Thank you.

Exactly how are you trying to create PDF in Word? (We assume you are on Windows, correct?) Are you using the Acrobat PDFMaker facility from the ribbon or Save as Adobe PDF as opposed to Save as and then specifying PDF?

Is the problem with some fonts, all fonts, and if only some fonts, which?

There are any number of possibilities here including issues related to particular font embeddability although if that was the problem, printing to the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance would yield an error message if the font embedding flag was wrong. If Windows 10 the problem could be that font is improperly installed. Fonts should be installed for all users and not just the current user.

More information and maybe even posting a sample Word file (and accompanying PDF file) would help diagnose the problem.

Hi

To answer each of your questions.

Yes I am using Windows.

The problem occurs when I try to Save as PDF.  When I do that the fonts don't show up.   When I Print to PDF there is no issue.  However I need to save to PDF.  I have recently discovered that when I Save as PDF and select Options and select "Bitmap text when fonts may not be embedded" the fonts show up.  But I would like to alleviate that extra step each time I use this file (which I use a lot, so can be cumbersome after awhile).

The issue only occurs with the Univers donts that I have installed on my computer.    I would love to provide a sample of the word document but I do not see an upload option here?

Thank you

Univers is a copyrighted font by Linotype.

The basic (cheap) "desktop" license allows you to use the font when you print a document, as well as view the font on your computer screen.

But if you want to embed the font into a digital file, such as a PDF or EPUB, then you must purchase an additional license to do that, called an Electronic Publication License.

Once you have purchased the correct license to embed the font into the PDF, you then can select the option to embed it in Acrobat/Word's PDF export settings.

See https://www.fonts.com/font/linotype/univers

Fonts containing specific flags, that control if and in what way they can be embedded, printed, installed etc. So it can be that your font doesn't allow what you're after.

The following is just for general knowledge about font permissions: https://www.adobe.com/de/products/type/font-licensing/font-embedding-permissions.html

https://www.itg.ias.edu/content/embedding-fonts-microsoft-word-documents-windows

Check the licence of your specific fonts to find out, what you are allowed to do with them. Since Windows 7 the permission is displayed by Windows in the datails tab of the font files properties dialog.
