it sounds like you're not using an installation file, but are using an update file.
to make sure:
uninstall all acrobat and reader versions using your control panel.
clean per Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs
restart your computer
install your acrobat std dc using the installation file below
