Adobe PDF / Scroll bars still missing

I've looked at all the posts and their answers. It's very frustrating. I've done all the suggestions. Still no scrollbar. If I adjust the page size manually -- pull it in or out -- the bars appear for a few seconds then disappear. I can't grab them.

I cannot scroll up/down or side to side. Mac Ventura. Acrobat Pro version 2023.006.20320

Any other ideas or will there be an update to fix?

Correct answer

Hi J.M.S.

Thanks for explaining about Zoom to page level. It's not something I ever use –I do View > Zoom > Fit height if I want to see a page fitting the window. However, I've just had a go at using Zoom to page level.

In order not to show any pre-published confidential material, I created a  new blank PDF page and, as you say, selecting Zoom to page level, there's NO scrollbar.

However, it dawned on me that if there's only one page in the doc and we're viewing at page level, there's nowhere to scroll to ... and maybe that's what the developers thought ...

... so I tried adding a second blank page and immediately the scroll bar appeared (see attached – this time with more helpful file names).

I then had another thought and deleted my extra page again so I just had a 1-page doc. Viewed at Fit Height or Zoom to page level, it tells me it's showing at 59.8% and there's NO scrollbar (see attached).

However, if  I increase the percentage size to 75% so now not all the page is visible, the scrollbar appears.

I don't know if this helps and sorry that I'll need to press on with work, so I can't reply for now, but fingers firmly crossed.

Thanks for the work you did with this.

The thing is, when I view a document like your 2-page doc, I don't have the scroll bar. But I guess this is because you have continuous scrolling enabled, and not single page view.

For now this solution works!  for me on mac Sonoma:

Follow the steps mentioned by Lorenzo Colorectal:

https://acrobat.uservoice.com/forums/590923-acrobat-for-windows-and-mac/suggestions/47248445-scrollbar-disappeared

1- close Acrobat ( VERY IMPORTANT)

2- Open "com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro.plist"  file, using a proper text editor like BBEdit (System's TextEdit does not open PLIST binary files) this file is in : macos/Users/your username/Library/Preferences/  or Go to folder : ~/Library/Preferences/

3-  then FIND the string "Honor" and you should get to a parameter named "HonorOSTheme". Just after the end of that <array/> tag, insert the following:

<key>HonorSystemScrollerPref</key>
<array>
<integer>0</integer>
<true/>
</array>

4 - Save and close

5 - open terminal and execute "sudo killall cfprefsd"

6- set up "always" in MacOS preferences>Appearance>Show Scroll bars

7-  in preferences Acrobate  General/ Touche Mode: Never

and Acrobat now has scrolling bars always visible

Yes Polo, that solution had already been given here a few times, see the marked as correct items...

The missing scroll bars is idiotic. I use them as a visual guide to know where I am in the document as I am reading. To have to start to scroll to make them appear is rediculous on desktop. And they don't even appear if I HOVER over where they're supposed to be? PAIR that with the fact that acrobat SCROLL SPEED is way faster than on other adobe apps. So it is an exercise in frustartion where I try to scroll a LITTLE bit to see how far along I am in the document and then shoot 2 pages down and have to scroll back to find where I am. LUNGING at the scroll bar with my mouse while it's still visible to scroll carefully by dragging the handle. While I'm at it... WHY can I not double click a word and hold down the mouse to then drag and select more text? It works that way in ALL other adobe apps, but not acrobat? I mean all these differences make me feel like acrobat is made by a different company than adobe! (rant done I guess)

When are they going to resolve this?

Installed new update yesterday, 2023.006.20380, thinking surely someone at Adobe got the message about missing scroll bars.

Nope, still missing.

How do escalate this problem so that it actually gets fixed? And soon.

Bravo, Adobe!!! What a great design feature you've added. Simply genius, if you ask me. But, why stop there? If you go ahead and hide ALL the tools and functional features - just think how clean that interface could look. And, if you hide the image or content... whoa baby! Now, that would be a CLEAN interface. Just some food for thought.

LOL! You may be on to something. Just how modern can the Acrobat experience get?

Any update on fixing this absolutely absurb bug, Adobe? It is killing my workflow and I suspect there are many like me who use a Wacom tblet and don't have the luxury of scrolling.

The lack of a scroll bar is terrible. Fix or I will abandon your platform.

Working on Sonoma-14 OS, Acrobat Pro 2023.0006.20380

These are the steps I've set-up/use to get the scroll-bars to be available when I'm working on multi-page documents. Steps 1-3 are done first, quit Acrobat after completing all within Steps 2-3. Then, for the arrow key/hovering mouse pointer step, it's a quick-key workaround each time a document is opened - like using "command-R" to get rulers to appear on a document (despite having "Show rulers when opening documents" checked under Preferences/Units & Guides - grrrr!)

1) Mac System Preferences/Appearance/Show Scroll Bars = check "Always"

2) Acrobat Preferences: a) General - Touch Mode = "Never"; b) General - "Make Hand Tools..." (top section of General) = make sure all 3 boxes are unchecked

3) Acrobat View (menu bar) - go to Page Display, select "Enable Scrolling"

Quit Acrobat

Open Acrobat Document.

4) in the main pasteboard window, move mouse's pointer to the far right where the scroll-bar used to always be; click that area of the pasteboard (to make sure the main pasteboard is active) & KEEP mouse's pointer hovering in that area; press & click the keyboard's right arrow key (the 4 arrow keys located to the right of keyboard's "return" key) - the scroll-bar should appear & once you click on the scroll-bar with your mouse it should hold & scroll as long as you're working on the main paste-board. The same process applies when using the left-side Page Thumbnails (where I really really was going crazy not having access to the scroll-bar!!!!). If you "lose" the scroll-bar while working on the document, just repeat the "click mouse pointer over area where scroll-bar used to be/keep pointer hovered in that area/press & release right arrow key/and select scroll-bar with mouse pointer."

Good luck! And Acrobat better come up with a permanent solution - not right that they haven't fixed this yet.

This does not work if you are using a Wacom pad - the pen does not bring up a scroll bar, no matter which settings are used.

Meanwhile I am really annoyed by this. I paid for a working software. Currently I am reading pdf documents with my web browser. It is ridiculous that a large company like Adobe is unable or unwilling to fix such a severe problem (hundreds of people are complaining in this forum). If there was a crowdfunding initiative to sue Adobe I would support this.
