Question

All PDF's opening with a black filter over the top of the whole document - Adobe Acrobat DC

Hi,

I can't seem to stop all my documents from appearing as 90% black. Can ever so slightly see the document underneath.

I've made sure I'm logged in

I've tried logging out and logging back in again

I've uninstalled the programme and reinstalled and made sure it's the latest version (V21.0 installed from creative cloud desktop).

My subscription is still valid (using university enterprise account)

I've tried unticking "use modern interface" check box under the signature settings.

I've made sure the documents are actually on my computer and not being fetched from the cloud.

I've checked to confirm that 32bit is the only version they they have and that I shouldnt be on 64bit version.

I've switched it into light mode and dark mode - no difference

It happens to ALL PDFs that work fine in all browsers and Illustrator.

I happened at no particular point (so I was already on W11 and it worked fine.

When I looked into Creative Cloud desktop to reinstall, I did notice that Acrobat DC was the only one in the list that said up to date with the rest having update available written next to them so I don't know if it's an update that caused it.

The only other thing I can think is something to do with my graphics card but unsure why as Premiere Pro and illustrator aren't affected at all and are working fine.

Computer:

Asus Zenbook Pro Duo UX581L

Windows 11

Plenty of storage and ram

GeForce - RTX™2060

I'm completely lost as to what else to check for now. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Harry

Check the Accessibility preferences, this should not happen, but this is where I would look first. Download and install the free Acrobat Reader, how do your pdfs look there? If ok, try resetting your Acrobat preferences, or re-install, selecting the "replace existing preferences" option.

Hi Luke,

Success - thank you. Nothing in perferences but the Reader install and then back to Acrobat fixed it.

Only noticed your reply today, I thought no one had answered!  Thanks for this. When I tried originally to install reader it said I couldn't so following your advice I uninstalled Acrobat then installed reader and it worked fine.

After reinstalling Acrobat DC the first document I tried was again black whilst others were fine.  I went into illustrator and resaved the one showing up as black as a new file and made sure it was the latest for compatibility when then resolved the issue.  Interestingly the original then also worked even though I never saved over it.

I'm still not convinced I have found the cause of this issue as I uninstalled and reinstalled previous as well and it made no difference but for now it appears to be working fine apart from the first doc I opened.

Thanks for you prompt reply,

Cheers

Harry

Glad you got it working. It's a bit troubling that the first pdf you opened showed the black, and that you couldn't install Reader, that suggests there may be something wrong outside of Acrobat. I would consider making a backup of your important files, if you have not done so already, for insurance.
