Alpha numeric characters appearing when 'Save As PDF' from MS Word

New Here ,
Dec 20, 2023 Dec 20, 2023

I am trying to print/save my Word document with headings & several links to a PDF, where all the hyperlinks work.

From MS Word, if I 'Save AS PDF' I am seeing some alpha numeric characters against some headings & links (see attached ), and the hyperlinks work.

From MS Word, if I 'Print to PDF' then there are no alpha numeric characters, but the hyperlinks dont work.

Hi there

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out.

'Save As PDF' is a MS process to create the PDF. Please try to create the PDF from the Acrobat ribbon present in the MS Word toolbar and see if that works. https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/creating-simple-pdfs-acrobat.html

FYI I found 2 fixes.

1) From Word, File menu, Save AS, select PDF from the drop down list.
or
2) From Word, File menu, Save as Adobe PDF, when the 'Save PDF File As' prompt appears click on OPTIONS, untick 'Convert Comments' & 'Convert Word Headings to Bookmarks'

How can I set my preferences to have these options turned off all the time, and not me changing it on each file?

As Amal said, use the Acrobat tab on the Ribbon

  • First click the Preferences command, then go through each tab and choose (or confirm) the settings you want
  • Then click the Create PDF button on the ribbon to create an Adobe PDF (not a Microsoft PDF)
