Annotation tools

We have just updated to the latest version of Acrobat Pro and have found that instead of chosing the text annotation tool and then being able to delete, insert, replace directly using the keyboard you now need to pick an individual tool each time you want to mark an annotation.  This is adding considerable time to all tasks we do and driving us all slightly mad. 

I have searched the help menu and found nothing on this.  Is there a way to change the preferences so that the much quicker functionality from previous versions is replicated?

Consider the "new Acrobat" as a beta version, many features are still missing or half-implemented.
