Bates Background

Is there a way to give a bates number a background? My goal is to put a title in red and individual bates number on each page, but I want a box around the bates number so it is easily identified and can be read over every color without having to resize the pages.

What are my options?

Not using the built-in commands, but it's possible to use a script to insert those numbers as text fields, which can have a fill color and/or a border color. I've recently developed a tool for a customer that does pretty much that: Emulating the built-in Bates Numbering function of Acrobat while adding additional features to it which are missing from it.
