Best practices for embedding Arabic PDFs and maintaining font accuracy?

I'm working on Arabic religious text PDFs (Quran content in Arabic, Urdu, and English). I want to make sure fonts render correctly across platforms, especially on macOS and mobile.

What are best practices in Adobe Acrobat or InDesign for:

  • Embedding Arabic fonts

  • Avoiding font substitution

  • Keeping file size optimized

Here's an example of what I’m referring to (not promotional—just for reference):

Any advice on font compatibility or export settings would be appreciated!

Hi Omer Ch,

Thank you for reaching out.

Please refer to the information suggested below:

- To embed fonts, refer to the information in the following help document: https://adobe.ly/4kGzkkg

- Font substitution occurs when the viewer's system lacks the original font. To prevent this:

  • Always embed fonts during export.
  • Avoid using system-specific or non-licensed fonts.
  • Use Unicode-compliant fonts that support Arabic ligatures and diacritics.
  • In Acrobat, verify font embedding via Document Properties > Fonts.

- To keep the file's optimized size:

  • In Acrobat, use File > Save As Other > Optimized PDF to reduce size without losing quality.
  • You may also refer to the information in the following help document: https://adobe.ly/4nZuNwf

Hope the information helps.

Thanks,

Meenakshi

Hi Meenakshi,

Thank you so much for the detailed and helpful response!

The guidance on embedding fonts and preventing substitution is exactly what I needed. I’ll make sure to use Unicode-compliant fonts and double-check the embedding through Document Properties. The PDF optimization tip and the provided Adobe resources are really valuable as well.

I’m currently applying these practices to some Arabic/Urdu Quran PDFs that I manage on my project:
https://quranpdfhub.com/ – just sharing it as a reference for others working on multilingual or religious texts.

Really appreciate your time and support!

Thanks again,
Omer Ch
