Can client edit/ad alt text that I've set up in InDesign and exported to PDF?

Hello,

I've added alt text to images in InDesign. My client has Acrobat Pro. I'd just like to see if there's a way my client can edit alt text if they want to.

I see instructions for adding alt text in Acrobat but no editing or viewing those already there.

Yes, with Adobe Acrobat Pro, your client can use the Set Alt-Text utility that's in the Accessibility Toolbar.

Just launch the tool and Acrobat will find all graphics and cycle through them one at a time. Your client will be able to edit the existing Alt-text, create new Alt-text, or mark the graphic as an Artifact/Decorative.

This  task is best done with the most current version of Acrobat Pro DC:2018 because it corrects a slight bug that's been around for a few versions. Nothing to prevent the user from using the Alt-Text utility, but the highlight on the graphic would be left/right about 1 inch.

However, when I click on an image and then click on Set Alternative Text it says "there is no figure information to display."

It could be when I exported the PDF from InDesign I didn't click something that would enable that. So I will go back and look and hope your suggestion works. I did not export it as a tagged document yet. We're still in proof stage and I don't do that till the end.

Alt-Text is a part of tagged PDF.

No tags = no Alt-Text possible.

Why not do a test export of a tagged PDF and see if that clears up the problem? The Set Alt Text utility should then work.

Hi Bevi,

I did eventually export this doc as a tagged PDF. I got to the Alt Text in Acrobat and none of the images show the text.

Do you have any suggestions?

What do you mean by "show the text"? Are you trying to create tooltips?
