Hello,

We just installed acobat pro 9.0 with all the updates.  The user tries, but is not able to edit pdf docs.  I am not that familiar with acrobat pro but the pdf docs the user is trying to edit was created originall in word then saved as a pdf doc.  Why cant the user edit the pdf docs?  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I have similar issues occasionally with documents scanned using Acrobat 9.0 Standard. It appears to be an imtermittent fault. The security settings show 'no security' and that editing (for example cropping) is permitted but most of the edit functions are greyed out and those that are not say you have insufficient permissions and to change the security settings, but the security settings themselves are greyed out! A possible work around is to create a copy of a 'good' editable file then drag and drop the pages from the 'corrupt' file into it using the page navigation. Then edit the copy file.

Scanned images need to be successfully processed by Optical Character Recognition software before there will be editable text. If the scanned image is converted to text, the text could be text on the page or an image with hidden text under the image.  If you have a page of text you can edit the text but if you have the image with invisible text under it, you can edit the text but you will not see the changes.

There are also issues with having the necessary fonts on your system to replace the text edited.

Acrobat is not a document creating and editing program, so it is very limited in its abilities to edit a document.

If, as you said that, the PDF file was generated from Word doc and you could not edit it, why not convert it back to doc for editing? I know that you would be worried about the additional cost. Actually you need not. Of course, I don't suggest free online software like Zamzar.com or pdftoword.com, which works inefficiently. Try to use this free desktop PDF to Word Converter, which cost $29.95 before. The application can preserve the original text, layouts, graphics and hyperlinks in an editable word documents. Then you can edit it easily in word. Since you have Acrobat installed, you could easily convert word to PDF after editing. Check this way and hope it helps.

does the PDF have a padlock on the top left of the document. If it does then its secured and if you say it was converted from Word then the PDF maker setting are set to lock the PDF down.

If there is no padlock, which tool are you using 'touch-up edit/text tool found in advanced editing toolbars? What exactly are you trying to do?

    Hope that helps?

Normally you would not edit a PDF. Think of a PDF as print on a computer rather than print on paper. Editing is just as much a pain, though it can be done if it is not secured as mentioned. The proper way to edit the information is to go back to the original document, edit that, and create a new PDF. If there are form fields and such, then there is other work to be done to manage the form.

I don't think this is any sort of answer to the OP.

What if someone sends you a PDF and you need to edit it.

In my case someone has sent one of our users a PDF and the user needs to edit the document.

I save it as a Word document and it will open in word but you can't do anything with it.

    The file is not locked.

I have tried Rich Text, asccessable text nothing works.

Adobe advertising states you can edit PDF's saved from Acrobat Professional 9 to Word.

    How?
