Question

can't print after 9.4.2

Hi,

After updating Acrobat Pro from 9.4.1 -> 9.4.2 yesterday, a couple of our users can no longer print pdfs.  I've uninstalled and re-installed twice, and I can confirm that it is the 9.4.2 update that breaks it.  I print from 9.4.1, install the update, reboot, and can't print.  I've scrubbed the registry after the uninstall as best I could thinking there was a registry setting somewhere that broke, but no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Bob

Whilst I appreciate your efforts to publish a workaround, what most of us require is a proper solution. You have stated that Adobe are working on this, but you have not given us a planning timescale. Are you talking today, tomorrow, next week or what?

What I  find inexcusable is that 9.4.2 is still available for download on your website. Why have you not pulled it?

If you do not have the authority to answer this personally, perhaps you could ask those that do to respond please?

    February 16, 2011

I couldn't agree more with jthjth! I could care less about these "workarounds". I am not about to attempt the editing of the files. If they can't test their updates, then I doubt they have really tested the effects of these workarounds! I have just told my users to do the right click and print or drag to print queue for now as that certainly can't make anything worse.

Seriously, why is 9.4.2 still being downloaded to my users computers??? I have yet to hear an answer to this!

I really find it hard to convince those with the money to upgrade to version 10 after all this. I can almost certainly make the case to go with another vender.

am having the same problem -  its definitely 9.4.2 that did it

There are so many posts about this now.

Mine actually tells me there is a problem: I print to a HP photostart premium 309a and I get a message

" Before you can perform print-related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you ned to install a printer"  Press OK then quits out, with alas like all the other complainants nothing printed.

Hope Adobe fix this soon: frustrating to get automatic updates to go backwards!!

    Hi Mike,

Could you please try the following?

    Solution A:

    1) Go to Printers and Faxes of your system.

    2) Select the HP photostart premium 309 and right click and set as default printer

    3) try printing from acrobat and that should work.

if the above solution does not work then try following and this would definitely work

    Solution B:

    1) Go to Printers and Faxes of your system.

    2) Select the Adobe PDF printer and right click and set as default printer

    3) try printing from acrobat using the printer of your choice (HP photostart premium 309) and that should work.

Please let us know which solution worked (either A or B) for you . your inputs are important to us.

    Thanks,

    Atul

Option A did not work ( I had the HP309a set as the default printer all along anyway) but Option B worked fine. First pdf I've been able to print in days.

I am running Windows 7 32 bit with all critical updates.  After upgrading to 9.4.2, I can print from my HP 7600, but cannot print from my HP 1320.  None of the workarounds discussed work for me.  I get no error message, it just will not print.

    Please try this

1.) go to the installation directory of Acrobat (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat)

2.) Look for the file "Adobe.Acrobat.Dependencies.manifest"

3.) Open it and delete the line containing the entry atl.dll

4.) Reboot your machine after saving that file*

For step 3 above, if you are in Vista, please copy it somewhere in My Documents, do the edit and then place it back

That seems to have worked.  Thanks!

    Try this, It will work..

Go to Control Panel>Printers and faxes>Set Adobe PDF as the default printer

everytime you want to print a regular file (Not a PDF), after clicking print, just select the printer you would want to print the document from..

Or you can also Uninstall and reinstall and do not do any updates up until the next update is available

That only works if you actually have the option of selecting Adobe pdf as printer which I no longer can. Even after managing (after hours of trying) to get pdfs to print on my hp, it changes the size of the printed page -- either too big or too small (think Goldilocks and the 3 Bears) but not the correct size. Since it always worked before, thinking ADOBE needs to give us a fix for this too.

We also upgraded to 9.4.2 and are using terminal services.  Although we are printing, the

quality is poor or only a partial document prints.

Here is the error message: "Before you can perform print related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer." I couldn't do a print screen when this error message was present.

Running Windows XP with a networked HP Officejet Pro 8500 printer. None of the work arounds that were suggested work (right click, etc.).

Thanks for letting us know you're working on the issue.

Is there a registry key that we can switch to disable automatic updates and the notifications for them? I would like to be able to prevent additional users from installing the updates until a patch is released.

    Thanks in Advance!

    Thanks in Advance!

Create a DWORD entry called “bUpdater” with a value of 0 under the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\9.0\FeatureLockDown\

    Hi guys,

*Heres a quick fix for printing issues with the 9.4.2
1.) go to the installation directory of Acrobat (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat)

2.) Look for the file "Adobe.Acrobat.Dependencies.manifest"

3.) Open it and delete the line <file name="atl.dll" />

4.) Reboot your machine after saving that file

--Long way of fixing it is to uninstall and reinstall acrobat and update unitl 9.4.1 and never go to 9.4.2

*Another error that you mite encounter is an error  saying that you need to have a printer before printing using acrobat.

    quick fix would be

    if using windows

    1. go to start > control panel > printers and fax

2.set the default printer to adobe pdf

    3.open acrobat then print

4.choose the correct printer and proceed with printing

    hope this helps!

Not only can we not print in XP and Win 7 environments to our HP4014dn.

The paper size is being changed in the preview from the defualt size.  This issue does not seem to have been mentioned.

Switch to different printer and the paper size comes back correctly for the document in the preview

Thanks, hope the fix is on its way.........
