Question

can't print after 9.4.2

Hi,

After updating Acrobat Pro from 9.4.1 -> 9.4.2 yesterday, a couple of our users can no longer print pdfs.  I've uninstalled and re-installed twice, and I can confirm that it is the 9.4.2 update that breaks it.  I print from 9.4.1, install the update, reboot, and can't print.  I've scrubbed the registry after the uninstall as best I could thinking there was a registry setting somewhere that broke, but no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Bob

Editing the manifest file worked well for me on Windows 7. Some tips that took me some time to figure out:

    - you need to change the security settings of the file: right-click on the file and open "properties" at the bottom. Choose the "security" tab, and click "edit" to change permissions. There you should choose "users" in the "groups and user names" box, and click on full control beneath "allow" in the "permissions for users" box. Apply and hit okay to exit out of these windows.

    - now open the file in notepad, find and delete the line referred to in the posted instructions, and simply "save", then close the file.

    - reset your computer then try to print

    Good luck!

    GOOD NEWS!!!

Through playing around I have found a workaround

(My setup-> Windows XPSP3 with an HP Laserjet P4015)

    1. Open your PDF.
    2. Go to File->Print
    3. Select your printer from the dropdown
    4. Click Properties.
    5. You don't need to actually change anything. Click OK
    6. Click OK on the print dialog.
    7. Your document should print.

Unfortunately, you do need to do this for every print so it's a minor inconvenience. Adobe, please fix!!!

    Dear goldbergj,

Yes, this workaround works fine for some printers - but the sure-shot solution is to make edits to the MANIFEST file.

It also frees you from doing that repetitive step.

Meanwhile, Adobe is working on releasing a fix shortly.

    Thanks

    Dear users of Acrobat,

I am posting this reply to the original message on the forum from Bob.

I wish to thank all users for actively pursuing the issue, kindly give a feedback whether this works as a solution.

We are extremely sorry for the discomfort caused by our product. A decent workaround can be suggested for now:

1.) Please go to the installation directory of Acrobat (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat)

2.) Look for the file "Adobe.Acrobat.Dependencies.manifest"

3.) Open it and delete the line <file name="atl.dll" />

4.) Reboot your machine after saving that file

This should set right all issues coming up.

    Thanks

Which program do I use to open the "manifest" file? I use 32 bit Vista and the file will not open.

Use notepad. You may then have to save the file to another location

then copy it back to the proper location, overwriting the original,

due to permissions. That's what I did and it worked.

Looks like this problems is only with HP printers. I shorted out the problems in one HP 4350 changing one of the printing properties: print all text in black. Doesn't matter if it is active or not, just change it. You have to change this every time Adobe is opened. In HP 4515 I have not this property to be modified.

Same problem. Running Windows Vista 32 bit with an HP Officejet 6500 e709n series all-in-one. It says I don't have a printer installed. My drivers are up to date. I use Acrobat Professional. Don;t have time to deal with this right now . . . need a fix ASAP. Very disappointed this problem is so widespread and has not been fixed yet.

Add another disgruntled user who can't print pdfs -- everything was fine until the upgrade this morning. (acrobat pro) Spent hours

I don't have trying everything, In the process, lost the nonfuntioning adobe pdf printer among installed printers --may have messed up ports who knows-- I too use an HP office pro 8500 printer and Windows 7. Very small, multi-tasking biz owner and consultant and IT is NOT my thing. I'm not about to rip apart my computer to fix your error. Just fix it now.

Same Problem here, Running Window 7 32 bit, HP Laserjet 1200, using 'HP Universal Printing PCL 5' driver.

    Hi,

Just to add additional perspective on this problem, I just spent 2 hours on the phone with technical support.  A lot of effort was made to adjust default settings for my various printers, but nothing worked.  As reported by other users, nothing has (or should have) happened to the default print drivers/settings.  They work just fine in the myriad other programs I use day-to-day.  After making various adjustments, the problem was not solved.

Also, this 9.4.2 update problem is not specific to HP.  I do print to an HP Color LaserJet and an HP (B&W) LaserJet, locally and across our network, and the PDF printing issue extends to both.  But I'm also not able to print to a Sharp MX-M350.

Adobe: We need a solution for this...and fast!

Also- our printers are network printers and they all have the newest drivers available already, so that doesn't help! Like the previous poster said, documents from any other program prints just fine.

    Dear user hokie11,

Did you try clicking on the properties button on the print dialog before printing out to the printer?

This seems to resolve the issue for all the printers with which we tried.
