Cannot restart Adobe session if password protect window is cancelled or closed.

When we try to restart Adobe Acrobat application after pressing Canel button on a password protected PDF file, Adobe Acrobat stops opening.

Same happens if the password protect window is closed out.  Attempting to open Acrobat fails.

If password is entered, file opens, can be closed as normal. Try to start a new Acrobat session opens without issue.

Have found in windows 11 Task manager,  2 adobe processes continue to run when freezing occurs. Ending the processes allows Acrobat to open as normal again.

Why does process continue if you want to cancel out of placing the password in the prompt?  Is there any other way to end the running processes than going to task manager?

Thanks in advance.

Hi roberthTSR,

Thank you for reaching out, and sorry about the trouble caused!

I understand you're experiencing an issue where Adobe Acrobat fails to reopen after cancelling or closing the password prompt on a protected PDF. This behaviour, where background processes remain active and prevent relaunching, can be frustrating.

When you cancel or close the password prompt, Acrobat doesn't fully terminate the session. Background processes like Acrobat.exe or Acrord32.exe continue running. These lingering processes block new Acrobat sessions from launching.

Please try the following troubleshooting steps:

1. Manually End Background Processes.

2 .Use the troubleshooting steps suggested here: https://adobe.ly/4nmwemX

3. Reinstall the application using the steps sugested below:

- Remove the application and run the cleaner tool (https://adobe.ly/42Obc9m).
- Reboot the machine
- Install Adobe Acrobat from the following page: https://adobe.ly/4nnnL2O.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Meenakshi
