I'm having to edit some documents that were signed to fix the numbering of some questions and cannot figure out how to change the numbering of a list to start at a different value.
ex.
1. aaaaa
2. bbbbb
3. ccccc
standard listing is set as such and I want to start the list as shown below.
5. aaaa
6. bbbb
7. ccccc
I appreciate any help.

This is ridiculous. I have bullet points that are numbered and between two different pages. How am I to start at where I left off on the numbered bullet points. It starts at 1 again on the second page instead of 3 on the second page. Quite annoying!

Whinging gets you nowhere.
If you need to change the content of a PDF that much, then edit the content in the original document and reconvert it to PDF.

You need to explain more about what you are trying to do. What is the context of this list?
To this point, Acrobat is not an document editing tool. It does provide some editing functions, they are only good for simple fixups, not for major changes. If major updates are needed, then the edits need to be made to the original document. Since this PDF is scanned, then the best strategy may be to convert it to a Word document for editing.

I don't why such a simple question from Christine should need "explain more about what you are trying to do...",.
I like to know why a numbered list must start from "1", "1)", "i", "i)", what is I want to continue the numbered list on another page which should start with 21) because the numbered list on the previous page ends on 20)!
This is A Designer's Short Sighted issue, and Acrobat PRO has to be updated!

Acrobat is not a word-processing tool. The fact you can edit the static contents of PDF files at all is a small miracle, and goes beyond what was ever meant to be possible to do with them. So don't expect the capabilities you have in Word or InDesign when editing a PDF file.
And if we're asking a question it's because the answer is important in trying to understand the situation and providing help. If you can't even be bothered to answer then don't expect to get any help from the volunteers who post here on a regular basis.

Please pardon me for being FRANK with you that I am doubtful if you are a genuine daily Acrobat User.
I put it to you here that:
1) Acrobat DC PRO does able to begin a number list other that thet very first alpha-numeric sentence headers;
2) I have make Acrobat working by first, split a number list in 2 sparate pages inside Miscrosoft Word;
3) Then, compile the Word into Acrobat's PDF format;
4) Then, I continued the splitted numbered list starting from "3) aaaa aaaaa aaaaa;" by pressing Return Key. I got "4) _", and I tap on Return Key again;
5) I got "5)_", isn't clear enough fro me to have DEMONSTRATED to you that Acrobat does have the ability to following whichever in the Header of the very first numbered list!?
6) The issues here with everyone raising this symtom of Acrobat is:
a) Why do we need Microsoft Word is a mediator for a numbered list that needs to span across 2 saperate pages of a PDF documents?
b) Why didn't the Designer forsee such a frequent need by adopting some key combos such as "Shift + Space" or "Alt + Space" after an Alphanumeric Header like "4)" to make the beginning of a new numbered list.
7) Please take your time to view my Screenshot and pass the Users' Need to Acrobat's Management!

If you want to make a suggestion for an Acrobat upgrade then do it.

Try67 is correct (and much more experienced with Acrobat than you). While it is unfortunate that the Acrobat UI has the window dressing of editing tools. They are just there for minor fixups. Acrobat is not a content design tool and does not have the features to support it. Acrobat is a document finishing and processing tool. You can thrash about all you want trying to use Acrobat in an inappropiate way. That's not our business. But it doesn't change that Acobat is not a proper content editing and design tool.

Hmm, I'm not sure if that's legitimately "Acrobat DC PRO [being] able to begin a number list other that thet (sic) very first alpha-numeric sentence headers," since you're switching to MS Word in the middle.

Completely agree, Acrobat may not be a word-processing tool but if they are going to make numbered bulleting available within Acrobat then it should have the functionality to continue numbered lists on following pages, otherwise remove it completely as it is only functional if you create the entier document within Acrobat which it is clearly not designed for.

I don't think wanting a numbered list to start with a number other than 1 is too advanced for Acrobat. I have the same issue. I am able to do a lot of detailed edits and changes in Acrobat but that is one issue I agree with the original author on. The original question was very clear, if you can't understand it maybe keep your 2 cents.

I was just looking at doing this exact thing, on an existing contract I wanted to add a paragraph and continue the list below the one I added
What I ended up doing was to remove all of the numbering list below the one I added and re-type them afterwars, begining with the number I needed.
Some one might find this usefull on a year or so!

Having the same issue.
The workaround I found is, go to the last number you want to follow, say it's 32 and you wanted to insert the number 33... at the end of the paragraph of 32 click 'Enter' to bring up the 33.
Type or paste your text after the 33.
Then copy and paste the whole paragraph box (which includes the new 33) and paste it where needed in the document.

it's not working, cant copy the numbering 😞
