Convert to JPG doesn't save the file

Hi there so I have had the user try to convert a pdf file to a jpg file 3 different ways and none of them actually create the file.

This is happening for a few users in our organization if we go file, convert the progress bar moves slowly and then you go to find the file and it's not there. Then if you go file, save as tick the convert box it moves quicker and then you can actually see the file in file explorer. However when you open the file it says that it has been moved or deleted and then the file disappears from file explorer.

Would appreciate some help with this as it is causing our users quite some frustration.

It looks like it's a setting in the Security (Enhanced) tab.
Go to Edit > PreferencesSecurity (Enhanced) and clear the check box Enable Protected Mode at startup. See attachment.

What application are you using to do this export to JPEG? In Acrobat, I use File>Export To>Image>JPEG and that has always worked without a problem.

It seems that others have the same problem too: see e.g. https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/pdf-to-jpg-does-not-work/m-p/13319615

I also briefly saw the jpg-icon in the folder where I wanted to save the exported jpg but it disappears quickly. Surely a bug, but now to find the cause ...

You are right, this does look like a bug in Acrobat. I am trying to get Adobe's attention. Between the two threads, there are at least four people affected by this.

Hi @Elpenoor

Hope you are doing well.

I tried to reproduce the issue on my end, and it’s working fine.

Here are a couple of things we can try :

  1. A new version of Acrobat is now available, version 22.3.20281 (Mac) and 22.3.20282 (Win), Please make sure the users are using the latest version of the application. Go to Help > Check for updates. They can also download the patch manually from the link https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/ReleaseNotesDC/index.html
  2. Users can try to reset the Acrobat preferences as described here https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/how-to-reset-acrobat-preference-settings-to-defau...
  3. They can also try to create a new test user profile with full admin rights in Windows and try using the application there to see if it’s a user profile issue.

Let us know how it goes.

Amal

Thanks for the follow-up, Amal.

I've installed the latest update but to no avail. I have removed all Adobe applications from my computer and cleaned any preference files, but after reinstallation, the problem persists.

I did create another user account on my Win 11 computer and there the export to jpg from Acrobat Pro works flawlessly ...

Now, I wonder if it could be related to the fact that my default Windows user's folder name (which I couldn't choose but Microsoft chose for me ...) contains an accented character ("Björn")? I'm just saying this because I had a similar issue this week with some other software and the problem didn't occur in my test account (where I just used "Bjorn", without the accented character).

Hi @Elpenoor

As the application is working fine in the new user profile, it seems to be some issue with the regular user profile. There isn't much that we can do in this case. You may try to repair the affected user profile and see if that helps.

OK, but what do you mean exactly with 'repair the affected user profile'? I still find it strange that only jpg export doesn't work, the other image file types do work.

Hi @Elpenoor

Please go through the MS Help page that i have found https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile-in-windows-1cf41c18-7ce3-12... and see if that works.

Thanks for the link, Amal, but then I'll have to reinstall all my other software, which is not an option. I'll convert via Photoshop then.

I'm not sure what's causing your saving issue, but I suggest you reconsider the JPG aspect.

JPG is great for photos where details are obscured by the varying pixels of flowers, people, sand, etc. But for text, JPG is a dreadful format. What happens is that to make the file smaller, you get JPG degradation. Below I have two screenshots: one is a JPG, and one is a PNG of the same file. In both, you can see the pixelation caused by zooming in, but one displays the "junk" left over from the degradation.

BTW, besides the degradation of the JPG, the JPG file was 1.4 MB, and the PNG was 687 kb. Please note that if there was a photograph on the PDF being converted, the larger file would very probably have been the PNG.

When you look back at the history of the replies, it was confirmed that this is not a bug in Acrobat, but due to a corrupt user profile.

I don't know if this will help, but today I had the same issue.  It has been working all this time and I save to the same place on a network server.  Then today it just stopped working.  It looks like it worked but when I go to access the file there is no file created.  I opened the file in the same place I want to export the jpg but choose a different location to export (in my case I chose Downloads) and the file exported as it should.  I am not sure why all of a sudden I am having this issue but it works as long as I choose a different folder location than where the PDF file exists.

Interesting. I tried this, which led me to realize I can save the converted file anywhere except to our server.

Maybe a change in Acrobat made it more resilient against whatever was going on with your profile?

I'm in the most recent version but still having this issue, which I've had for at least a year now. Being able to easily convert PDFs to JPG was one of the last things I used Acrobat for 😞

Well if it is a profile issue then the person I just tried to assist and their colleage and indeed myself all have faulty profiles.

Or maybe it is not a profile issue at all.
