Distiller issue

Hello together,

I'm Administrator of an application installed on Server which uses the Adobe Distiller V9 to create PDF Reports.

The application is a service and running by a systemaccount. Now I realized that the creation of the PDF-Report are not working anymore.

I found out that the Systemaccount can not create PDF using the Adobe PDF Printer anymore.

It doesn't matter from which application (Wordpad, Notepad, ...) I'm trying to use the printer, I'm getting the window to store the pdf and when it is finished printing the file is not there.

The printer is using the Distiller, I tried to open the Distiller. The startup window is just poping for a second but nothing happens/opens.

The interesting point is, when I use my personal Account everything works. I can print PDFs using the Wordpad, Notedpad whatever and

I'm also able to open the Distiller.

Here is the content of the log, but the message seems more general than specific:

I hope you can help. The Systemadministrators/IT department here in this huge company are not really helpful, maybe someone of you can give me a hint.

Regards

Stefan

Distiller is not for server use. Hence you have the wrong product, based on my understanding of Adobe'sdocumentation and past statements, which may be incomplete. Unless you are still running Distiller Server, a product discontinued after version 7 and replaced by LiveCycle PDF Generator. It is a very common error to try to run the end user Acrobat products on a server, but they are not technically suited for it whatever the license issues.

Is the log message about a PostScript error for each document, or at startup?

Check if Distiller is using a prolog.ps file at startup.

As this is an error only in one user account, you need to focus on what is different between the two accounts.

First I don't have the wrong product! As I have explained already the application Im administrating is using the Destiller to create PDFs

AND it was working and is still working in another production building (different system, but same installation). So please stop coming up with those answers.

The one I posted is from startup. I checked the same log when my account opened the Distiller and there is no error like this in it.

This is for sure an error based on this systemaccount. Luckily we have the same system installed in another buildung for another production plant and there it is working, but my colleague is using a different systemaccount like me.

I took both account and asked the IT department to check the difference. But you have to know, an outsorced IT department is not that fast, competent... it takes a while till you have the right one!

But I'm pushing and hopefully there is a difference in both users.

At one time it was possible to run individual use products on a server until Microsoft changed the configuration of MS Windows servers to not allow the use of individual use products. It could be possible that you might not have been using the product as licensed and desired by Adobe and some update resulted in a software failing to operate.

It is also possible to put Acrobat on a workstation server and allow individual users on the server use Acrobat so long ans the number of licenses in use at any one time does not exceed the purchased number of licenses.

Another situation is when a user on their desktop starts distiller on their desktop and sets up "Watched" folders on a network drive to receive PS files to be distilled and placed in an out folder. This does not violate the user's license since there is only one copy of Acrobat running on a desktop but the files being processed are on a server. One can create multiple watched folders in this scenario. In fact I have even set watched folders located on a VAX Alpha server running Dec Open VMS and used 3 desktops to distill the PS files on the Alpha system.

Hint: you have the wrong product. Look into, instead, LiveCycle PDF Generator. (Unless that actually is the product you have)

If you are using the server version of distiller Distiller 9 is very old. Distiller service for servers is now part of the LiveCycle server product line.

Thanks for the replies so far. I have to use this Version of the Distiller because the application which I'm running on this Server requires this to create PDF Reports.

The servers I'm administrating are within a Pharmaceutical company and this implementation is not the only one. I'm wondering also, because it was working during the setup last year.

As I said login with the systemaccount on the server => trying to print a pdf out of an application like Notepad, Wordpad, Word,... isn't working as well as trying to open the Distiller itself.

When I login with my personal credentials and trying the same as described above it is working. Can someone give me a hint which I can then forward to the IT department here?

Thx in advance

Stefan
