DRM Password Protection and Fire tablet issue

I provide downloadable documents in a PDF format, and I typically put a simple editing protection password on them before upload - but not a reading password. In my tests with a Samsung tablet, various mobile phones, etc this has not presetnted any issues, but it appears the specifically on Amazon Fire tablets this protection is preventing users from opening them on their devices. This is a big problem, as a number of my customers will be using these exact devices specifically.

Is there a reliable, alternative way to protect my work and still allow these users to access the content?

Such passwords are basically worthless because many apps just ignore them. They are absolutely not classed as DRM. I suggest you give up, you're making things hard for yourself for no benefit.
