Embedding fonts when exporting PDF to MS Word from Acrobat DS

Does anyone know if its possible to embed the fonts in my PDF (made from an Indesign file) when exporting a PDF to MS Word from within Acrobat DS. At the moment it converts all fonts to Arial. Layout is good though.

What you seem to be asking is the ability to use the fonts that are embedded in your InDesign-created PDF to use in a Word document that you subsequently exported from that PDF.

To that, the answer is simply, No.

Technically, this is impossible for many reasons.... not even considering the legality of distributing fonts (fonts allowed to be embedded in PDFs are there only to create the end product, i.e. the PDF... thay cannot be used further).

a) in most cases, you are are only embedding a subset of a font anyway, so only the outline required to create the characters actually used in the document are saved. Even if a font is fully emebded, there are no font metrics in a PDF. To spot edit a PDF requires the font to be installed on the system OS.

b) When you export to Word, it does it's best to reference the fonts used, so if the user has them on their system, they should appear correctly. Otherwise, a substitution is done.

c) (and this is a big one): Microsoft has dropped support for Type 1 fonts, so if your document uses them, even if they are installed on your system, recent Word versions will not see them. At one point this was true just for the PC side, but I jsut did a test now, and even the current Mac verison ignores Type 1,

Hi roaringmousegraphics, many thanks for this. I did actually assume what you have written was the case but want to explain to my clients so having explainations other than my own, might help them understand the issues.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for reaching out.

Could you please elaborate on your question? Please confirm if you are trying to embed fonts in the PDF and experiencing an issue.

What do you mean by Acrobat DS? Are you referring Acroat DC?

It would be helpful if you can share the sample PDF on which you are trying to embed fonts.

Thanks,

Meenakshi

Hi sorry Meenakshi,

I am exporting an Indesign CC file to PDF and then to MS Word using Acrobat DC.

I used Myriad Variable Concept for the layout but at the end of the process my client asked for it in MS Word.

I am able to retain much of the layout but the text when generated from the PDF outputs in Word in Arial.

I just wanted to know if its possible to output the MS Word file in Myriad but that appears to be impossible.

Thanks

Can you reapply the font within the word document?
