FLEXnet Licensing Service hanging PC and hard drive paging

Today I found the service "FLEXnet Licensing Service" listed and was wondering what was using it.  I decided to stop it and disable it.  While going about my business today I noticed that another problem disappeared from my PC.  Once I went to look at a docuemnt in acrobat 9 it told me I had to reinstall due to a problem.  I remembered I disabled the "FLEXnet Licensing Service" service this morning.  So I change the service from disable to manual, opened Acrobat with a document and my PC hung with the hard drive light on constantly.

I just scoured google with the term FLEXnet Licensing Service and hanging and noticed some threads.

Is this a known issue?

      The Flexnet Licensing service is used by most Adobe products to prevent piracy. When you mess with it, you are asking for trouble. Restore it to its origial state.

      i learned that this program is indeed needed.  but I believe it to be causing other issues and why would it run even when im not using an adobe product?
