Fonts not printing correctly

Has anyone seen this happen when printing a pdf to a laser printer (see image)? On screen the type is fine but when printing to a laser printer, the type, in certain areas, get filled in or the shape of the letters are deformed. When I convert all text to outline, the shapes of the letters on screen and to a laser printer is fine.

Any ideas about why this happens would be appreciated.

Have you tried saving the original PDF and outlining the type with Pitstop in the extra copy?

Just because a font previews on your monitor correctly, does not mean it will print correctly.

Yup. I've tried outlining the fonts Pitstop with perfect results. This is our current work-around. I will check to make sure we're using a postscript driver to print and also check to the firmware.

Someone had mentioned "hinting". Maybe it could be a cheap font with bad "font hinting"? I don't know where the font came from since it's from a client. I'll check that too.

Thank you all!

The properties will give you a quite good idea on the fonts used. Very often customers do even not know that info... :-)

You didn't indicate what type of printer you are printing to, but there may be a bug in the printer's firmware in terms of how it interprets font data downloaded to it (especially in an esoteric area known as “hinting”) for certain fonts.

You might want to check with your printer vendor to see if they have updated firmware for their printer or even an updated printer driver. Acrobat and Reader simply pass along the embedded font data directly to the printer via the printer driver.

I'm printing to a Xerox WorkCentre 7525. I'll check to see if there are any firmware updates with this printer. Thank you.

The WorkCentre 7500 series of printers is now discontinued, but they do support Adobe PostScript 3 in addition to emulations of PCL5c and PCL6.

Make sure that you are printing through the PostScript driver such that printing is using Adobe PostScript 3 and not the emulations of PCL5C and PCL6. And for PostScript, do not use their Windows Version 4 printer drivers. They simply don't work! Assuming you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you should use the driver at WorkCentre 7525/7530/7535/7545/7556 with built-in controller File Download , the Windows Version 3 printer driver for this device.

Also, if your printer is older than late 2016, you should update the firmware located at WorkCentre 7525/7530/7535/7545/7556 with built-in controller File Download on Xerox's website.

Please let us know if either of these resolves the printing problem.

Is this a free font or a paid font? I would contact the font vendor and notify them. It could be how the font is drawn.

Fonts are embedded?

Yes, font are embedded. I double-checked the fonts in Acrobat and also with the Pitstop plug-in to be sure.
