Question

Glitch with selecting text near quotes

I'm having a problem with a document that I converted from Word to PDF. It used all the same settings as usual, and a template that didn't have any issues in the past. But after conversion, there are glitches with selecting text in lines that contain quotes. Most of the line gets skipped, leaving only the quotes themselves and some sporadic other letters.

For example, the line:

We have used the terms ‘frontline’ and ‘investigator’ to describe officers’ main functions and responsibilities.

gets registered as:

W m ‘ ’ ‘ ’ ’ m and responsibilities.

This affects double quotes as well as single. It seems worse with curly quotes, but using straight quotes doesn't completely fix it. I'm using Acrobat Pro.

Any ideas what's causing this or how to resolve?

What's your version of Office and Acrobat?

What command (and exact settings) are you using for the conversion from Word to PDF?

Does this happen with all files, or just some? Does it happen with all fonts, or just some?

Can you share a sample file?

Microsoft 365 for Enterprise, Acrobat version 2024.002.21005.

In Word, I use Save As and select PDF from the drop-down menu. My settings are to create bookmarks using headings, include document properties and structure tags, and to use bitmap text when fonts may not be embedded.

These settings are the same every time I convert to PDF, but I've only seen the glitch in one file. My organisation has always used Arial, but I just tried it using Calibri and the glitch hasn't appeared.

I can't upload a file here because of my organisation's settings, unfortunately.

The "Save As PDF" command is an MS one. Try using the Create PDF command under the Acrobat ribbon.
