I have an editable pdf that I'm trying to highlight. Instead of letting me highlight words or sentences it insteads highlight an entire area in a weird shape. I just want to highlight straight across as if I'm highligting a single line sentence or word. Any help is appreciated.

This happens due to an incorrect structure of the PDF file. You can't fix it using the free Reader.
However, what you can do is hold down Ctrl when making the highlight, and then it will switch to "free form" mode and you would be able to highlight a certain area.

I'm trying to use basic adobe acrobat and I cannot get the hightlighter to work. I've had nothing but trouble with adobe this whole week. docs won't open and it's driving me crazy. I try restarting etc and nothing is fixing it.

Hi there
Hope you are doing well and sorry to hear that
Is this an issue with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs? Please try with a different PDF file and check. If the file is stored on a shared network/drive please download it to your computer locally and then try again.
What is the version of the OS and the Acrobat DC you are using? To check the version go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure you have the recent version 24.02.20759 installed. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.
Also try to repair the installation from the help menu (Win Only) and see if that works.
You may also try to create a new test user profile with full admin rights in Win or enable the root account in MAC (https://adobe.ly/457zbQM) and try using the application there and check.
If it still doesn't work, please remove the application using the Acrobat cleaner tool https://adobe.ly/4aGahc6, reboot the computer and reinstall the application using the direct link https://adobe.ly/3WWkY6X;
