I printed a file to adobe. Now I want to highlight a couple of lines in it. When I try to do that I get a long oval shape and not the highlighted line. What can I do to change it back to the way it was before when it would highlight the line?

I must have saved it wrong. It works now though. Thank you all so much. Yes, drawing tools to highlight text would be great.

There are no comments. I just need it to highlight a sentence and it is highlighting a large oval shape.

If you've selected the Highlight tool that means there's no actual text in the file, just an image, so it's defaulting to an area highlight instead of text highlight. You would need to run Text Recognition on the file before being able to highlight the text in it as such.

I ran the text recognition tool and it is still doing this.....This one if from the comment bar, but it does it with the highlighter as well.

Can you select text?

no and when I highlight over it, it shows the huge oval thing

If you can't select the text then you also can't highlight it.

no it doesn't, still getting the large cursor. I changed the thickness in the comment section but that hasn't helped either.

ok, how do I select the text. I used to be able to run the cursor over it.

This is precisely why we need the drawing tools to be able to highlight objects. I asked for it and it was declined without explanation: Use the Drawing Tools to highlight objects – Share your feedback on Acrobat DC

If Text Recognition did not work there's not much you can do about it.

What can you at the navigation pane Content?

it appears to not actually recognize the text. Only a small bit of it. I am going to try to save again.

After running Text Recognition, are you able to select the text? If so, does it select it correctly, or does it show a very large cursor?

Did you open the comments pane on the right? If you have highlighted anything, there should be a "Comment" listed there. There won't be any text in the pop up.
It will likely look like this. Simply click on the highlighter mark in the Comments pane and then delete it.

It does come up. I don't really want to make a comment though. Just want to highlight a line. It used to work just fine and it still works on my MAC (regular Adobe).

So how did you fix it I am getting the same issue.

Thank you for reaching out.
When you try to highlight text on the scanned PDF on which the text is a part of the image, the highlighter will appear oval in shape. If that is not the case, please let us know.
Would you mind elaborating on the issue you are experiencing with highlighting text?
Do you experience the behavior with all PDFs? If not, please share the PDF on which the issue occurs.
Thanks,
Meenakshi

wow I see an oval highlight when I simply want to highlight a few words. How do I fix and why is this such an issue?

I got the same issue and finally figured it out from all these helpful comments.
It was because I printed the pdf from the screen/website. When I went back and downloaded it, I got a version that I could then highlight!!!!
Printing it as a pdf must be the same as scanning it in. I always thought it did not matter if you print or download, and now I know. Thanks so much for helping me get this!
