How can I create a single labelled, tabbed PDF document?

How can I create a PDF document "divided into sections clearly separated by lettered tabs" as a single pdf document. Each lettered tab should be labelled as described below." These are the requirements of the US embassy in BKK for a kind of Visa application. I tried bookmarks and PDF portfolio, but was rejected as wrong format.

You need to ask them what they mean by "tabs", exactly. Basically, there's no such feature in PDF file. It might just be a visual thing, not an actual functionality.

Hi,

I believe what you are looking for is how Acrobat combines multiple files into a PORTFOLIO. Multiple files become sections and Portfolios come with design templates that enable you to use 'lettered' tabs.

The older versions of Portfolio had more visual options but it also used swf technology. Though it may not remind you of the older visuals, I think Carmille is correct in suggesting creating a Portfolio. The benefit of a Portfolio is that the original format can be kept. Try it and see if it meets your needs. You can find it under the File menu:

Katie and Carmille,

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately the Embassy is not giving any further information about the format. They rejected the PDF Binder that I sent them, but I agree it seems like the closest possibility. At this point, I am thinking they are just stonewalling the application for some unknown reason..

Thanks,

Carl

Can you visually create an opening page with tabs that are linked to the content? A sneaker way of doing it but then you get the tabs. The TOC should have been all you really need but if they want a visual of tabs make it and add it as an opening page. They are clearly not making this easy for you. Let me know how it is resolved.

Did you try making a single PDF that just had tabs on some of the pages, so when printed you get something like tabs?

Some embassy sites have a rule that you must bring in a paper folder with printed paperwork, and actual tabs in the folder. Their instructions use EXACTLY the words you found. Looks like in going digital they haven't really updated the words.

So, don't use a portfolio, and don't use bookmarks. Use something that prints as tabs.

Hi, I'm having the same issue with the "tabs/dividers for US visa application in Canada. Anyone solved this issue and had their applications accepted? Which program did you use? I inquired but they didn't give any specific answer. Just said 20 MB, 70 pages single .pdf file. Hope some has answers, thanks!
