How do I fix 'Out of Memory' notice when making a pdf in Acrobat Pro DC? I keep trying to distill a pdf from InDesign and am getting an Out of Memory notice in Acrobat when the art is about to pop up.

You should never use Distiller with InDesign. Instead, use Export from InDesign.

Thanks for that. I exported and still am recieving an 'Out of Memory' notice when the pdf opens up. Any ideas? I've tried everything I've found online and nothing is working so far... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Are you able to PUBLICLY share a link to the problem PDF? (No personal or sensitive info)

I sure can. Please find a screen shot attached. It normally pops up with the artwork displaying but instead, shows up white/blank like this and the 'Out of Memory' notice in the middle. Please find two shots below. Thank you for your efforts!

SOS... I have print jobs that are past deadline.

You actually cannot publicly share the pdf without closing the 'Out of memory' box first. Then it is just a blank pdf.

The screen shots are interesting, but there is nothing to analyse there. Please check whether you get this error each time you try to open this "blank" PDF. If you get the error every time, please share it. Just because it's blank doesn't mean it is empty.

Hi TSN and thank you for your reply.

I just tried to open the pdf saved to file and it comes up blank with the 'Out of Memory' notice still. With my old Acrobat, I used to just go to 'History' and then delete it and it would fix the problem. This new version doesn't offer that option. It's soooo frustrating as I cannot get ahold of a human at Adobe.

Great (sort of) that you still get the error. So, can you share this file, please?

Is there no way to access and delete the memory cache?

You have many red herrings here. I would like to analyse the file. Please share the file another way, I can't currently access DC on the system I use to read forum messages. Also, please give your current DC version (not "latest" please).

I'm not sure what version it is, it is part of my Adobe Creative Cloud 2020 package. It just says 'Abobe Acrobat Pro DC' on the program file name. How else can I share the file with you TSN? I can upload it on a file sharing website like 'we transfer' but I would need an email address. This format doesn't allow for pdf attachments, only jpg, png, etc... I just tried.

The version is in the About box as usual. Help > About... in Windows. Like 2016.123.45679.

No, you cannot use Wetransfer; I cannot get into any private conversation at all. You have to post it publicly, so anyone might look at it if they want to confirm your problem (almost certainly an Acrobat bug).

You will have to bear with me TSN, it's my first time on this forum. How do I post it publicly? I thought this was public. Obviously, I'm off the mark.

Ok, thanks I poked around and found a way to download it and get it to a computer with DC. Yours is indeed up to date. I too get the out of memory error. Don't be misled by online display: that doesn't use Acrobat. You have an Acrobat bug and no cache exists of the sort you are looking for.

I'll see if I can find anything. Meanwhile, now you have a good, solid, failing file you might like to report this to Adobe. https://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html

Tips

1. This submits bug reports to Adobe bug doesn't mean you will be kept in the loop, or that it will be fixed on any schedule.

2. I suggest keeping the report simple. Avoid the speculation and symptoms you've described, it will confuse Adobe as much as it did me. Say "I exported this file from InDesign [give version]. When opened in Acrobat the page is blank and I get the error Out of memory. Other people also report they have seen the same error with my file."

Good luck!

Sometimes IDML format is magic to repair broken files.

Try to open the INDD file with InDesign, save it as an IDML file, close it, reopen the new IDML file, save it as a new INDD file, then try to Export as PDF using the InDesign File menu (not Distiller).

Thank you for your suggestion JR. I gave it a go and followed the advice to a tee (twice). Sadly, it did not work. I tried making the artwork @ 25% scale and then exporting it. That did work, but that isn't really solving the problem. I deal with large files regularly. Thank you again for your insight and will keep that in mind for the future.

Ok, here are some results. Cut to the chase: you have an image in that document which is unbelievably big. It is 23858 pixels square, 300 ppi on an 80 x 80 inch background - with a transparency mask the same size. Just reading this CMYK image will need more than the 2 GB Acrobat can use. Try reducing it, it is almost certain this is not needed, and is the result of a problem in your workflow, setup, or planning. If you believe you MUST have this, I suggest you go to the InDesign forum and let them argue with you!

Details: Acrobat can use no more than 2GB of memory, and in fact it doesn't even try. It uses 600 MB and then stops, presumably because it can't read the image. Interestingly, older generations of Acrobat do not give an error; they were written in the era when there was less memory so things were done in pieces. They use 600 MB and then continue.

TSN, you are tenacious and correct. Thank you for all the insight, I'll adjust the artwork as it is only happening with that file. I scaled the indesign file to 25% and the pdf file is now just under 1 Mb from 14Mb when the artwork was at 100% and is displying fine in Acrobat. Thank you again for your diligence and have a great day!
