How Do I Get PDF files to Stop Opening When I download Them?

New Here ,
Jun 09, 2025 Jun 09, 2025

How do I get the PDF file to stop automatically opening in Adobe when I download a PDF?  This is not a browser issue, as it is not opening up in my Chrome browser; it is opening up on my computer with Adobe. This just started a few days ago, and I have not changed any of my Adobe settings. Thanks!

Hi Lori,
Hope you are doing well!

It sounds like Adobe Acrobat is currently set to automatically open PDF files right after downloading — a behaviour controlled by a setting within the Acrobat application itself.

Here's how you can disable it:

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat.
  2. Press Ctrl + K to open the Preferences window.
  3. In the left-hand menu, select the General tab.
  4. Look for the option that says either:
    • “Open PDFs automatically in Acrobat when they are downloaded in Chrome browser." or,
    • "Always open PDFs downloaded from the web."

Note: The wording may vary slightly depending on your version of Acrobat but unchecking that setting will stop PDFs from opening automatically after download.
  5. Uncheck this option
  6. Click OK to save your changes.

Once you've done this, PDF files will download normally without automatically opening in Acrobat.

@Lori24955494p3jw did you also briefly change the default application for PDFs. To resolve this, you need to adjust your Windows default app settings for PDF files. Simply locate the puzzle icon (extensions) in your Chrome browser:

Click on 'extensions'

Slide the radio button to the left. Make sure you save this.

Same here - the options mentioned aren't in my General settings - mine look exactly like the screenshot posted above.

like the commenters below, there is no option in General settings to disable automatically opening downloaded files. Where has it moved to??

Solution needs updating. Adobe has changed something. My PDFs started opening on Print about some weeks ago. This change is new and the option mentioned here isn't available.

I have unchecked everything ever suggested, made sure my browser settings are not set to open automatically - I have done it all. Restarted my computer. STILL Adobe opens everything I download automatically. I am losing my mind over how I cannot stop this from happening.  Is this a glitch?  It just started happening on the latest update, I believe. Send help.

The same thing is happening to me and when I go to everything they suggest, the boxes already unchecked. This is a huge problem and has caused me lots of delays. I hope they fix it soon or we can get a better resolution.

Go to Adobe account online, not the app, and go to account settings and scroll down, and unclick

I was unable to find this setting in the application version.

I was so hopeful for this new (and yet another hidden area to check) idea... I did as you suggested. Restarted computer. Downloaded & it STILLLLLL does it. I'm dying inside. Nothing will stop Adobe at this point. I don't understand and assume it HAS to be a problem.

2 things which I tried:
-If you dont have the option in Adobe Reade, uninstall it and reinstall from new, now you have it.
but unchecking the box did not work for me. strange..

THEN: at the end I went to the settings menu of my google chrome browser - downloads, and there was a kind of setting called like "open automatically some data types" or something like this. removed this option, and now it works. Nothing opens automatically.
