Hi all,

Sorry for the delayed response and the troubled experience.

If you are seeing this message: "PDF won’t display. Please wait …"

You are getting this message while viewing a PDF in a browser, you are most likely trying to open a Dynamic XFA (XML Form Architecture) PDF. To view such PDF documents, we recommend you download the file locally and open it either in Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat.

please read this community discussion for more information on this topic: https://adobe.ly/3E9a5HB

There is another scenario, content preparation, for that please read this help page: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/message-content-preparation-progress-opening.html

Let me know if you have more questions.

Save the file (via the link!) and then open it in Adobe Acrobat/Reader directly, not in a browser window.

I have the same issue.  There are complaints about this from 2018, still no solution other than workarounds.

Adobe, get your act together and fix this.

There's nothing to fix, except for the misleading text about "waiting", which will do nothing.

I have some new PDF files that have been sent to me and I can't open even after downloading.  I have been able to open previous files from the sender but suddenly can't open files they are sending.  I have made sure my version is up to date and have tried lots of other troubleshooting.  I can't get anything other than the "Please wait... If this message is not eventually replaced..."

Did you download the files directly, or used something like Save as PDF?

Downloaded directly from Gmail like I always do.

Then maybe the file that was sent to you was already saved incorrectly. Can you share it with us?

Sorry for my delayed response. Attached are two of the files that I can't
get to open no matter how I've tried. Multiple different computers, all
the troubleshooting methods I found online, etc. The sender says they can
open the files just fine. I've been able to open files from the sender in
the past. They have tried sending these files multiple times and no
changes.

No files are attached, and all of your contact info was posted, again...

Do NOT reply via email. Go to the forum in your browser and reply directly. You can attach files to your reply, or share them via Google Drive, Adobe Cloud, Dropbox, etc.

Apologies for not responding correctly.  Hopefully, the two attached files are uploaded correctly now.  These are State grant documents, so they are public (they might look like they should be private - all good!)

Someone screwed up these files by saving them incorrectly. Do you have the original links to them?

Those are the exact PDF's downloaded directly from their email to me.  The attachments have not been touched by me, so you can see what I'm working with.

The files were screwed up before they were sent to you, then. It's impossible someone opened those files you shared and they appeared correctly. They must have opened a different version, the original one. Ask them for that.

That is what I assumed.  However, the State agency says that they have had their IT department look over everything and it is fine.  They are making me think I'm crazy that I can't open the files!

Somewhere along the way someone used the Save As - PDF command in their browser (or some other non-Adobe PDF viewer) to save the file, instead of downloading or saving it directly, and that stripped it from its XFA data and left nothing but this warning page. Ask them to share the original download link for the file, on their servers.

Strangely enough I just had this issue with a fillable tax form in Canada.

I tried downloading from various devices and browsers and finally just shortened the name of the PDF.  This actually allowed it to open.

I had tried opening the file throught Acrobat Reader directly (after ensuring that it was the most up to date - including uninstalling and reinstalling) but that didn't work.  It was the simple shortening of the file name that finally allowed the file to open, for some unknown reason.

My solution:

Just use this link : <link removed for security>

Convert XFA PDF To NORMAL PDF

thank me later for saving your files.
