How do I "unpaginate" subsections of a PDF document?

Question

I have a 268 page PDF document. I wanted to go to page 37 and typed that into the page number box at the top center of Adobe Acrobat Pro DC.

Instead of taking me to page 37, it took me to Page 37 (161 of 268). Instead of using the Bates number for the file, it used the page numbering from the underlying file. How do I remove this so that page 37 goes to page 37 in this file?

Hi

You can do this in Organize Pages or in the Pages panel. It’s called Page Labels now, and it changes how it appears in the navigation control, not on the page itself.

Select all the pages or some of the pages and apply the correct page label. For instance, if you have 3 TOC pages, you might select those pages and apply i, ii, iii.

It was called “page numbering” until Acrobat DC; now it’s “page labels”.

Is it working for you? I don’t know if you marked this correct or someone else did.

If you create a PDF that already has i, ii, iii, 1, 2, 3 ... from Microsoft Word or InDesign, the Page Labels come in automatically so that when you type 247 in the Go To box, then you land on the page numbered 247 and not 250.

When you combine documents or add a cover page, that’s when you want to ensure the Page Labels match the Page Numbering. You’ll see the labels under the page in the Pages panel and in Organize Pages to make sure you have it right.

I remember messing up once when I first learned it (a long time ago) so I selected all the pages and set the labels to 1,2,3 to get a fresh start.

If you use Google, remember that Acrobat called this Page Numbers until Acrobat DC. The only things that changed in DC are the name of the feature and that you can use the new Organize Pages panel.
