Question

How do I redact sensitive information in a 1000+ page document with handwritten and scanned text?

Hello I’m using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Pro. What is the best way to redact Social Security numbers, birth dates, and tax ID numbers in a 1000+ page document that contains both typed and scanned handwritten information? I’ve tried following the directions from this blog post 1, but it still misses handwritten and scanned text. Any suggestions on how to redact this information effectively?

You can use "Redact text and images" and redact what you want.

Bernd, thank you for the recommendation. The tool you recommended does a decent job of redacting, but it misses several dates, Social Security numbers, and tax ID numbers. Even a single missed number could be a problem. I also tried the enhance feature, but it did not improve the accuracy of the redaction.

If the text isn't picked up by the Text Recognition algorithm of Acrobat there's no way to reliably redact it.

You can try using a more powerful OCR application for the task, like ABBYY FineReader.

Thank you very much. I'll look into "ABBYY FineReader".
