How do I stop all my documents converting to pdf?

I have an Apple Macbook. I must have downloaded the free version of adobe at some point. Now, all my documents convert to pdfs from pages. How do I stop this from happening?

They did not convert, it's just that the default application for PDF files changed from Pages to Reader.

Thank you for the input, but I don't think it's what I'm looking for.

To update, I have Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. (Is that the free version?)
