How do I use the Erase Free Form tool in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, old version 11.0.23

I have a retired version of Adobe Acrobat XI Pro for which I tried for the first time to use the Erase Free Form tool. It did not erase any text or image in a PDF. Is there a setting or preference which must be entered to use this tool? Any feedback would be appreciated.
