How to insert page numbers in an existing pdf

I need to add numbers to each page of an existing pdf file.  Is there a way to do it in Adobe?  I'm trying to avoid printing, adding the numbers manually and then scanning the numbered pages in.

In Acrobat Reader you can use text comments.
