How to save footers from disappearing

I doubt this can be solved, the issue seems to go back several years here with no suggestions. The problem is that headers and footers created with Adobe disappear and apparently cannot be saved. Any fix for this?

This should not happen. Please describe in detail when and where (in which application, platform, etc.) these footers disappear.

I use Adobe Acrobat pro but this is with Adobe Reader, creating a pdf from a Word document. I seem to have temporarily fixed the problem, but now some of the footnotes have an error message printed with them: "Error! Main document only!" No idea what this is or how to get rid of it. If I try to print the pdf these error messages get printed.

There have been several omplaints about this on the internet but no solutions

Did you add the footer in Acrobat? If so, what tool did you use?

I won't say that this happens, but I have never experienced that.
