I am trying to install Adobe Acrobat Reader DC but it keeps installing Adobe Reader Touch

I'm trying to install Adobe Acrobat Reader DC on Windows 10 (using the first link on this site: PDF reader, PDF viewer | Adobe Acrobat Reader DC ) but whenever I start the download it sends me to the Microsoft store and prompts me to pay $1.29 to get Adobe Reader Touch. So I paid $1.29 and found out that Adobe Reader Touch seems to be a minimal version of Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. I can't edit fields in PDF files like I used to be able to do. Previously I had a version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, I'm not sure which version, but I had to reinstall it because it was somehow corrupted when I installed an HEIC to JPEG file converter. I have since uninstalled that program and tried to reinstall Acrobat Reader but as I indicate it switches me to a different version, "Adobe Reader Touch", that seems to contain fewer features.

It's only $1.29 so I won't complain about that. I just want some version of Reader on Windows 10 that lets me edit like I used to edit. The new Touch Version lets me add notes but these notes appear only as a small yellow sticker and I have to click on them to read the note so that's not acceptable.

I'm doing this for a friend so it's not my computer, but I can take remote control of their computer to try to fix this if someone can help me. Thanks.

the system info tool gave the needed info in the first 2 lines. The link said how to check. Anyway, had you installed anything else?

Apparently the problem has been fixed by a reboot. At no point was I told that a reboot was required when I was installing Reader, but that switched it from Reader Touch to Reader DC when I rebooted. Thanks for helping me. Sorry for wasting 15 minutes if your life.

Here's some info on what is now "S mode" rather than "Windows 10 S". What is Windows 10 in S Mode? This includes how to check. One of the specific selling points of S Mode is that you can ONLY run Windows Store apps, so your symptoms point more and more to this.

Thanks, but it says that S mode prohibits Command Prompt, and since I said I ran WINVER that means I'm not using S mode, since I used Command Prompt to run WINVER. I can still call them and find out what System Info says, but I'm not sure what you're looking for. Doesn't System Info generate hundreds of pages of information? What are you looking for?

By the way (our replies crossed over) 1803 is the current build as of August 2018. Here's a simple question: have you been able to install any other app which doesn't come from the Windows Store? This is all speculation, I've seen no other reports of this ever happening.

You can find out what it is using the System Info app. No point speculating until we know.  The first couple of lines identify the flavour of Windows 10 (Pro, Home, S, whatever) and the build number. Please post what you see.

It's not so much the version number as the variant. Some Windows versions have specific limitations on what they can run.

Ok, if the build number doesn't tell us what version we have, what is my next step? Their computer is a five year old Gateway box which I believe was upgraded to Windows 10 using some online download process. So that should strongly suggest this is the regular copy of Windows 10, not RT or Education or S or anything weird.

I typed WINVER and got this in a popup window:

"Windows 10

Microsoft Windows

Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.165)"

Looks like a normal Windows 10 build to me, not Education or RT or anything abnormal. So why can't I install Adobe Reader DC on this machine? It keeps redirecting me to the Microsoft store and to Reader Touch. I'm far from knowledgable about Adobe products - am I correct that Reader Touch is different from Adobe Reader DC, and not as capable?

That is the normal download which works for all compatible versions of Windows. Until now .What is the exact operating system on this machine? I asked if it was Windows RT. Or might it be Windows 10 Education?

Does this computer run Windows RT? If so Reader Touch is all there is. Otherwise, try http://get.adobe.com/reader . That is definitely Reader DC.

The link you sent me for downloading Reader DC was what I tried. When I tried that, it downloaded a small file, which, when run, directed me to the Microsoft Store online and forced me to download Reader Touch instead of Reader DC. (I am a little fuzzy on the details because I don't have a Windows PC in front of me, I have to take remote control of a Windows PC to see one.)

Is there a link on Adobe's site that actually contains the full Adobe Reader DC file rather than forcing me to download some tiny executable which redirects me to the Microsoft store and forces me to download Reader Touch? The link you sent me is not the binary, but it's a small file which, when run, downloads Adobe Reader Touch. Is there a link for Reader DC itself, rather than some redirecting application?

This sort of problem was common in the 1990s but this is the first time since then that I'm being redirected to the wrong version.
