Question

I tried to create a PDF using the File->Create->PDF from File option in Acrobat Pro. However, the Open dialog box doesn't show the .wpd file I want to convert to PDF.

"WPD" is not one of the file types Adobe list as capable of being converted.

Supported file formats in Acrobat and Reader

The linked article explains that the file type is associated with WordPerfect. The article also explains you need to install WordPerfect and then print to the Adobe PDF printer. Adobe does not have a converter for WordPerfect. WordPerfect has its own built-in PDF converter.

Another option would be to install OpenOffice.org Office Suite and use Writer to open the WPD file and export the opened file to a PDF.

That means it's not a supported format. Your only option is to use the Adobe PDF printer and print it from the original application. That will generate a new PDF file from it.
