Improve Quality of a PDF document

How do I improve the print in the document? Multiple copying has gradually faded the text and it is in need of resuscitation.

Are you talking about a scanned image? If so, you will need to use an image editing application to do that, like Photoshop.

It is a 267 page thesis. To use photoshop is not possible.

Why not? I believe it has batch processing capabilities, but you'll need to ask about that over at the PS forums.

I used to be that one could set the scanner to overcome fading in the document being scfanned. Why can't someone write a program to do the same for a PDF particularly after it has been OCR'd

Commercial grade scanners do have such settings for contrast, brightness, color, straightening, etc. Typically they are in the scanner vendor-supplied dialog box that you access when you scan from Acrobat.

The problem is that I have pdf documents in digital form and want to darken up the print. I don't want to have to print them and then scan them again to darken the print. Why can I not do this within the computer.

Very simple. Because image editing other than resizing and rotating is not currently part of the Acrobat feature set. Detailed image editing is a function currently found only in Photoshop.

Might raster image “cleanup” and other edits be nice in Acrobat? Sure. Such edits of raster images might also be nice in InDesign, Illustrator, and FrameMaker, but there is a limit to how much duplication and overall complexity can reasonably be forced into every single program. Conceivably, you could write some scripts to go through your PDF file and invoke the edit function for each full page image sending same to Photoshop for editing. Not easy, but something worth investigating.
