Incompatibility Between Acrobat DC and Word 2016

I have Adobe Acrobat DC 2015, and Microsoft Office 2016 / 365.  I kept getting an error for "Missing PDFMaker.dll".  After some investigation, it has become clear that there is an incompatibility between Word and Acrobat DC.  Most of these threads are two years old.

Has anyone found a solution for this incompatibility problem?

We are not aware of any such “incompatibility” here at Adobe assuming that you have updated you Acrobat with the latest updates since it was first released. If you do have the latest updates, I suspect that your installation of Acrobat may be corrupted. Try the Repair installation option under the Help.

I have updated both Office 2016 (365) and Adobe Acrobat DC to the latest versions.  I have also done repair installations on both.  and updated once again for good measure.

When the Adobe Acrobat DC plug-in in Word 2016 is enabled, Word will not start - just a splash screen and nothing.  Recovery is Word in safe mode, to disable the plug-in (add-in).

There have been several postings of similar issues that all seem to exhibit the same symptoms (examples below).  I have tried the corrective actions in most of these, all without any luck.

Not especially similar. I read the second link: Word is crashing, not showing a blank screen. Equally inconvenient, but worlds apart. The third is the same. The fourth is an error message. You seem to have a new problem.

Originally, I tried to create a multi-document PDF from several word files using the <select, right-click, combine files in acrobat> method.  The resulting error message is "Missing PDFMaker files".

Researching this problem led me to re-install Acrobat DC pro, which re-installed the Word Add-in, causing the Word application to not start.

Researching this problem led me to the incompatibility issues. of Word not starting when the Add-in was installed.

I have found these problems, or similar variations, on the internet forums in multiple places.

In general, there is a problem trying to run the Acrobat DC Pro Add-in in Word 2016.  Every variation of the problem seems to go back to activating the Add-in.  Hence my final question.

"Has anyone found a solution for this incompatibility problem?"

Alternatively, is there any way to enable the Add-in in the Office 2016 suite?
