Can anyone explain this to me? Every search I do for "merge multiple PDF documents into one PDF for free" or "convert x to pdf for free" has multiple hits from adobe and other tech sites saying that the convert and merge tools are free to use. There's also videos on YouTube with tutorials for how to do those things for free. I've done both for free in the past. But today every time I tried to do it, I got a pop up insisting that my free account wasn't good enough, and that I had to purchase a subscription or at least start a free trial. After an hour, I finally gave in and started a free trial. But the subscription costs over $20 a month with tax and I need to do it maybe 10 times a year...which would average out to over $25 for every time I have to do it! No way I'm doing that. Is a subscription now necessary to use the convert and merge tools or am I just experiencing a strange glitch? (I tried using the chat support feature but the person I was talking to wouldn't answer that question. They just wanted to me to upgrade my subscription or at least keep the one I have a free trial for, and was willing to lower the price to $9.99 a month, which still would average out to over $10 every time I need to convert or merge.) Thanks for your feedback!

Doing it using Adobe software was never free, and it isn't now, either.
There are probably third-party tools out there that will do it for free, but not by Adobe.
