Issues saving pdf's

I'm having problems saving pdf's after they have been edited using Adobe Acrobat XI Standard (11.0.23) on a Windows 10 Pro PC.

Once I have edited a pdf if I attempt to save it it shows an error "The document could not be saved. The file may be read-only, or another user may have it open. Please save the document with a different name or in a different folder."

This means each time I edit a pdf I have to save with a new name then delete the previous version which is time consuming.

Please if anyone has a fix it would be great to know.

The cause of this is MS Widnows, not Acrobat, and began when the Preview option was added to Windows File Explorer,

Windows sort of "opens" the file in order to generate the preview window, whether or not you actually have that file open. It only has to be selected (highlighted) in File Explorer to start causing the problem.

If the file lis still selected and visible in the Preview window when you try to save the file, you'll get the message that the file is "in use by someone else." I find this happens mainly with Adobe's programs, especially Acrobat/PDFs. And I can't recall it happening with Office programs. (Maybe this is one way MS tries to "hinder" its competition?)

Closing File Explorer is one solution. (Thanks Test_Screen_Name!) Here are a couple more.

    • Turn off the Preview option in File Explorer.
    • Once you've opened the file you want, move your cursor to highlight a different file in that folder. You don't have to open it, just highlight it so that Windows is previewing some other file.

The real solution, though, is to file bug fixes/feature requests with both Adobe and Microsoft. Do that through the companies' feature request forums:

I had the same thing and it drove me nuts; the only thing that worked for me was turning off my automatic back up to my Google drive. I haven't had that error message come up since I did this. You just have to remember to turn it back on if it's relevant to you!

Try making sure all Explorer (File Explorer, not Internet Explorer) windows are closed.
