Keyboard Commands to View Page Thumbnails

I used to be able to press my function key [F4] and get the page thumbnails to display. This was, of course, functioning just fine prior to all of Adobe's updates regarding its AI indoctrination campaign--not a fan, can you tell?

 

Now when I press [F4] I get the "Ask AI Assistant" prompt.

 

I have gone into my preferences and swtiched off the generated AI functionality--that hasn't helped at all.

 

Hopefully someone can shed light on what the (new?) keyboard command is to toggle on-and-off my PDF document's page thumbnails?

 

FYI, I work at an accounting firm, so 'collaboration' is not a saught after feature nor helpful when we prepare corporate tax returns.

 

All I want right now is for my [F4] button to toggle page thumbnail display.

On a side note, it's been awhile since I've been on the Adobe user fourms. The post on September 18th, 2025 titled "Meet Acrobat Studio" by @Tariq Ahmad must be a joke. The number of positive comments can only mean Adobe is engaging in a spin campaign. Adobe was once a postive experience--like, more that 10 years ago, maybe--now it's just painful all the time. One by one, commonly used functions are disappearing.

 

For the umpteenth time, Adobe, you guys STILL don't have my time zone available in the preferences. I have not only spoken to techs about this numerous times, but posted the request on your "Request a Feature" page, back in January 2023.

 

If Adobe reaches out one more time with their insincere, "I'm sorry you are having trouble with the new experience. How can we help?" I think I will loose my mind. How about they just fix the the software, plain and simple... especially when there is NO confusion with a lot of users re what needs to be fixed. Hey Kristine

You’re not imagining it — Adobe changed that shortcut. The F4 key used to toggle the Page Thumbnails (Navigation Pane) in Acrobat, but after the recent updates that added the AI Assistant, F4 is now hijacked by that feature.

Here’s what you can do instead:

✅ Current ways to show/hide thumbnails:

  1. Keyboard shortcut (new method):

    • Press Shift + F4 → this now toggles the Navigation Pane (which includes thumbnails, bookmarks, etc.).

    • If that doesn’t work on your keyboard, try Fn + Shift + F4 — depends on your system’s function key settings.

  2. Menu method:

    • Go to View → Show/Hide → Navigation Panes → Page Thumbnails.

    • You can also right-click on the left panel area and re-enable “Page Thumbnails” there.

  3. Optional: If you’re using Acrobat Pro DC or Reader DC (new UI), you can switch back to the classic layout for a more familiar feel:

    • Click the hamburger menu (☰) → Disable New Acrobat or Switch to Old Experience (if the option is available).

That should restore the old behavior, including the easier keyboard shortcuts.

Honestly, a lot of long-time users share your frustration. Adobe keeps layering new “smart” features on top of tools professionals have used for decades. Hopefully, they’ll start giving us more control over restoring legacy shortcuts like F4 soon — especially for those of us who just want to get work done, not chat with an AI. 😄

Hang in there — and definitely try Shift + F4, that’s the one that works for most folks now.

@Kristine5FD3 Adobe has re-mapped the F4 key to the new "Ask AI Assistant" feature, which is a major change for users who relied on it for quick navigation. There is a workaround that can restore the old functionality. You can disable the new Acrobat user interface entirely. Go to your menu bar at the very top, click on View, and then select Disable New Acrobat Reader.


This will force a restart, but when the program re-opens, the F4 key will be restored to its previous function of toggling the Page Thumbnails panel.

@creative explorer Thank you for your help, unfortunately, this is only temporary fix. Eventually, Acrobat will force everyone to no longer be able to revert to the old Acrobat, and we will still loose the [F4.] It would be better if Adobe did not take away the [F4] toggle in the first place.

@Kristine5FD3 I been using the 'Disable new acrobat' at the get go... so, maybe 2 or is it 3 years?
